The Death of Wolfe...My Version...

This is a tough picture to mimic...

Penny, West or Wollett...

there are discrepencies in all of these artists versions...

one rendition has grass...one has bare dirt...one has rocks...

both have large scale armies behind them...which I just can't duplicate...

so I just made my own terrain...and used a grass mat that I made myself...

I don't collect Quebec...I ended up with these figures from a guy I know and just wanted to take a shot before I sold them...

I'm happy with the shot even though it's not accurately groundworked...

very nice Mike ......but it is always nice and sunny here in Canada.....:D

Looks real good, Mike. Who's to say that your ground isn't accurate. The fact that all the artist's disagree on the ground is proof that the ground detail just isn't known for sure. -- Al

Thank you...

I know that backdrop skyline is a little ominous...hehehe...:D

actually all the paintings have a dark sky...

you and I both know that it's always sunny in Canada...

but I think the artists...took some "artistic license" in their painting to make a "darker/depressing" mood...

Thanks Al...

I spent 30 minutes searching images of dirt plains, dirt fields, dirt landscape, dirt ground, dirt terrain...etc...blah...blah...blah...

and I couldn't get close...

so just to finish the project...I used my own mat...

again...I can live with it...

Michael mate,
Just spilt my morning cup of tea and drop my crumpet on the floor in awe. That has to be one of your best. The set and background sky are marvellous and do wonders for the dio. Top effort, cobber.
Cheers Howard

Bravo!

Your scene rivals West/Woollett and Penny's versions.

The drama of the sky and the arrangement of figures make you a superb master of 18th C Romantic history painting. Benjamin West who trained the best would have been proud to have you as a student.

Congratulations on a striking scene.

My only complaint is that you are not going to keep that set. :D
If you were in 18th C England, it would have made your fame and fortune.

Nice pictures Mike.Has anyone ever been to where Wolfe died.I know in 250 years it can look totally different but then again maybe not.

I've been doing a lot of research on the death of Wolfe the past few months and your portrayal of the ground were Wolfe was supported/carried to, is almost certainly more accurate than any of the 3 paintings you mentioned. He was helped 100 yards or so to the rear to up the hill now called Wolfe's Hill to the remains of a French Redoubt which had been captured a short time earlier. Your's is the best diorama of the moment I have ever seen.

I have been there several times. It is a very large battlefield with quite a few areas preserved. In Canada, the Plains of Abraham is viewed as Americans view the Gettysberg battlefield as the #1 battlefield in the country. But is actually inside Quebec City now and other than the key parts of the battlefield, much of it has been developed or is part of the park.

Terry....

yes...modern progress...:(

such is the case with every battlefield from the past...

in my case...as far as accuracy of my rendition...

if any is to be found...it's purely coincidence...

I basically used what I had to take the picture...

I'm glad I did this photo...

I was unhappy with this mat I made...

I bought a wire brush today and worked it over really good...

I'm very pleased now with the results...

so if nothing else...I have a new piece of groundwork for other pictures...

WOWSER Mike, you really are cranking out these dios aren't you and they are fabulous. I think this may be your best yet !

Thank you...

Randy...it's a great set...when I was chasing the B of M's...I made a choice not to get POA...I have always regretted that...now that so much of it's retired...I just don't want another chase...

The stones and broken timbers are a nice touch. The redoubt would have had timbers and very likely stones as well, although I don't know if the redoubt was badly damaged or just captured.

Did you make the stones and timbers?

No...just some wooden mulch chips from my flowerbed and some rocks from my neighbors flower bed...but don't tell him...hehehe...

That is superb Michael, just superb:cool:

Cheers

Martyn:)

Just found this one Michael - excellently done. I must agree with some of the other's comments - one of your best.

Michael,

Really loving your latest small dio's you have posted in several threads, but I believe this one is my favorite out of your recent dio's.

Great job!

Darrell

Great!
Again, you don't need loads of figures to make a GREAT diorama!

Pete
