The Grey Zone is a 2001 movie by Tim Blake Nelson that is currently showing on the Criterion Channel but is also available on Amazon.
This is one of the most incredible movies I’ve seen and easily the best holocaust movie made. It’s a harrowing movie centered around the rebellion of the sonderkommandos to destroy the cremation chambers at Auschwitz, which partially succeeded although all the rebels were killed. Their plan is affected by a little girl who survives being gassed and the choices they make about her. The movie centers around the moral choices people make in trying to survive despite knowing they don’t have long to live.
The movie is not better known because it had the bad luck to premiere on 9/11.
