The reason Custer didn't take the Gatlings with him was (A) Gatlings were difficult to move over uncertain terrain and would have slowed him down, and (B) the Gatling horse teams were reject cavalry mounts and were likely to founder during the advance. Yes, that's why I referred to them as mules and obviously wagon wheels fare poorly on rough ground.lol. A bit of trivia on the mules, horses were used in coal mines but explosives made them go on their hind legs, hence fracturing their skulls, mules were not as touchy to noise...and a bit shorter, helped also...plus they can pull a load of weight for their size, a mini-oxen.
