Time to start this thread as getting nearer.

After the celebrations for the Queens Jubilee lets hope the UK does as good a job hosting the games.

I would be surprised if they were anything other than magnificent. Nobody does public celebrations better than the Brits!

Jack,
Going to be hard to beat Beijing for the Opening Ceremony but heard today they have 15,000 in it and Beijing did not have 1/4 of the Beatles (ie Paul).

Regardless of all that, I think I can confidently predict that someone from the IOC will observe that they were the greatest Olympics ever!

And it will rain from start to finish just to give it that British touch, hope every event is indoors, still looking forward to what will be a good games......:)
Wayne.

Is the British team full of Brits or like there other teams/cricket team full of,imports............................^&grin

That's my feeling too. I can think of no better place than London for the Olympics.

Time to bump this thread as only a few days to go. Only happens every 4 years.

Australia to have better medal tally than UK and California ?{sm4}

Was up in town today and what an atmosphere! Never seen London with such a level of security with the Police and Army everywhere but at the same time so many very happy tourists just loving being in the London sun and being part of it all. Spoke to plenty of US and Australian tourists and they were just fizzing with excitement of it all, less than an hour before kick off now.{bravo}}

You must be having too many of those beam and cokes all in one can. I would guess the Austrailian swimmers will get in trouble for something else before they even get in the water.

Interesting that social media is getting people kicked out of the games before they even begin. Isn't technology great. I guess its a bit better than having countries boycott the games due to where the All Blacks are playing.

Keep it silly

I'm really looking forward to these games.

I still think the UK guys have an unfair advantage with medal tallies by adding the Four (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales) different countries together {sm0}

Having a home advantage will make these Four hard to beat, but if we just wallop England I will be happy ;) Just kidding my Englander friends, with a special nudge and wink to Mitch and Rob ^&grin :wink2:

An impressive opening ceremony so far, I especially like the mini style countryside scenes.

Chris,

Population of California 37 million.

Population of Australia 23 million.

Just Googled Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte and happy to note neither are from California {sm4}

No chance. Probably no point in Californian's watching !!!

I always feel a bit ho-hum during the lead-up. There's so many stupid stories and 'storms in a teacup' - then the opening ceremony snaps me out of it. I always find it amazing how so many countries have a 'look' and not one due to costume. I particularly enjoy the 'look' of the Scandinavian ones! Some of the costumes are very impressive. Though I remember my father bursting into laughter a few years ago (Sydney 2000) when the Italian team marched out with red pants. It reminded him of his boyhood - the Italian POWs put to work in his farming community were all forced to wear red pants so they couldn't run off.

Well hats off to Danny Boyle for a superb opening last night. When it started with its farm,sheep and chickens we thought oh god this is going to be really twee bla bla, but from the moment the industrial revolution kicked in it was inspired. The satanic mills and forging of the Olympic rings rising to form in the sky was a master stroke. And how he got the Queen to say 'Good evening Mr Bond' (^&grin) and then 'parachute' her out of a helicopter, well it was genius. It was full of colour and humour and Rowan Atkinsons performance was also a joy. A great move to hand the torch to the next generation to light the Olympic flame and the cauldron itself was really good. The whole ceremony has today been described as ' Brilliant,Bonkers and British ' . For me the only downside was, and I know some people will call this treason....but Paul McCartney. I'm sorry guys, yes he's a musical legend and no one would argue with that, but this whole ceremony was about youth, yet once again we wheel out an old musician who's , lets be honest now, voice is no longer at its best , I think like the flame the musical baton should have been handed on to the youth of today.

Mind you, if rumours are to be believed the Spice Girls will be singing at the closing ceremony........has anyone got Paul McCartney's phone number!:rolleyes2:

Rob,
Did not see the whole thing but agree on McCartney. What I would have very much liked to see was Freddie Mercury doing We are the Champions (yes I know he is no longer with us) instead of McCartney and Hey Jude.

PS Pace yourself !!! You are now in a marathon not the 100m{sm4} Dont reply to this just now. Save it for a few days and then reply to several posts in one (ie. after each Californian gets beaten by a Brit or Aussie ^&grin).

Top marks for the ceremony, yep it's hard to top HRH skydiving.

It surely is a global games with so many contenders and not much separating the contestants.

I thought it was all absolutely brilliant, really enjoyed every minute of it. Sorry but the Brits really do know how to put on a show!!

Brett:

The Aussies are not fairing too well so far. It is still very early in the games though. Seems to me that everyone is doing bad in the water. That is unless you're a 16 year old girl from China.
