The "making of" the Pacific on HBO (1 Viewer)

Sorry guys, I found it to be disappointing. No where near the caliber of Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers. I hope the next episode is a lot better.

Louis.....episode #1 of BoB that focused on the training wasnt all that interesting either.....give it some time to get going. Comcast On Demand shows a 7 minute clip of the upcoming "Airfield Scene". All I can say is Wow....just wait.

P.S. My wife thought it was very sad that his Dad was more worried about his car than his son that was leaving for war! LoL

My ex wife was more worried about her allotment,,then her car when i was leaving, I enjoyed part one but think a two hour more detailed version was called for. Talking about the Pearl Harbor attack and showing twin engined bombers ,,,,

I totally agree with Warbuff, that episode wasn't only boring but almost to the point of absurdity...............Stryker P.S. I could only stand to watch it once!

I think that scene was supposed to show a man from a different generation where men were not supposed to show emotion. I felt like the father was distracted and trying not to think about his son going off to war. Maybe I am reading too much into it. I just remember my dad didn't say much when I went off to Boot Camp. His eyes gave him away though.

I agree with you 100%.

I,ve been waiting 3 years for this, ever since it was disclosed it would be done.
Really enjoyed the first episode, watched it again, an hour later, and enjoyed it more.
I believe we have a winner here!
I didn,t know the Marines were armed with springfield rifles on Guadalcanal. When did they get M-1,s?
Wouldn,t it be fantastic if Spielberg & Hanks would do a different war story :every couple of years. They have set the standard.

Gary: I quoted that little gem last week before the series aired. Yes the Marines landed with alot of WWI equipment that was standard issue until almost 1943. By Bougainville and Tarawa, the marines were up-dated with garands--but they took alot of japs out with those springfields, just like they did in the banana wars and across europe with the krauts in WWI. The germans couldn't believe thier marksmanship at ranges out to 1000 yards..........Stryker

I didn't think the 1st episode was boring, I thought it failed to capture the most important aspects of the battle for Guadalcanal - taking and holding Henderson Field, and the Cactus Airforce holding off the Japanese attempts to land thousands of reinforcements once the navy was driven away from the island. Plus, the night battle scene at Crocodile Creek was no where near as well done as the battle scenes in Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. Also they failed to show the Stuart tanks finishing up the Crocodile Creek firefight. I am sure the episodes will get better, but the first one did not live up to its predecessors.

The photo & doll scene for me was moving as well the guy who finalized the kill of the man being tortured by dancing bullets.

There was a neat little piece of historical accuracy when they were doing the birthday scene. The birthday boy was handed a hand grenade as a present. The grenade was yellow in color, denoting pre-war manufacture. These yellow grenades were around for quite a while before they were all used up. I just thought it was quite a nice detail. -- lancer

I enjoyed the fact that they didn't waste one entire episode on training and individual personalities..They went straight into battle with small introductions.. It went by too fast for me, just when it started getting good. As far as BoB went, the entire Battle of the Bulge came and went in one boring episode with artillery raining down on them..I dan't wait to get the DVD set

I don't think you can compare this with SPR as that was a 2 hr.movie and this is 10 hours which give them much more time to build up to the battle scenes.BOB didn't start out with a blast either but turned out to be an epic series.

absolutely loved it!!!! 5 stars, can't wait to next Sunday nite for part two...Sammy

Good detail on the early guys carrying 03s and things,,interesting on other sites how many non servers,,armchair pvts ,criticised "the confusion of the night action",, as hard to follow,,welcome to sort of the real thing. I thought the extending the flank left to cover them crossing the creek was very well shown,,even if it wasnt light enough. Geez

The Battle of the Bulge was depicted in two episodes, the first one focused on the medic, the second one the brutal artillery fire the men were subjected to (during which two of the main characters were killed, two badly wounded and a fifth had a meltdown from which he never recovered) and the attack on Foy, two and a half hours in total in case anyone was wondering.

As far as last nights episode, it reminded me a bit of the God awful movie "The thin red line", which played more like a national geographic episode than a war movie.

Last nights episode boosted a couple of features from that movie; the cakewalk landing, men fresh off the beach stumbling into several tortured Marines, the jungle hiding an unseen enemy for most of the episode, much like "The thin red line" did.

Last nights episode was ok, the main fighting on Guadalcanal is yet to come and the next episode should be a blockbuster.

You have to remember when watching this or BOB that both series focus on specific things, BOB on one unit, "The Pacific" on the experiences of three Marines, it's not going to show you the entire PTO over ten episodes, just their personal experiences, which were pretty brutal in their own right...............

Yep. I could never figure out why BoB is held up as being so great. The only episode I thought was halfway good was the Carentan one, along with one or two other good bits like the attack on Foy. At least in this Pacific episode I could easily tell one character from another, in BoB the whole cast melted into one uninteresting helmet wearing blob save for Winters.

All that said, I also disliked Thin Red Line so I hope it doesn't turn into that either as feared.

Well, I'm going to have to disagree about BoB. The first episode was very important for setting up the character portraits and gave us non military types a glimpse into training regimens.

I can't think of a bad episode. The Bulge episodes gave you a taste of what it was like to be there and telling the story from one of the participant's points of view. You actually shivered after watching those episodes. You also saw how politics can cost people's lives: Lieut. Dykes.

I usually watch this series once a year. I do that with very few DVDs, the others being the Smiley series from LeCarre. These are the only three I could not do without.

Thank goodness for On Demand and the FF function. I can skip all the typical Hollywood parts and get to the explosions.

You have got to be kidding, right?
If you did not think BOB was very good, I would be hard pressed trying to find something that would suit you.
All BS aside, what movie or TV series did you like?
