The Revolution Trilogy - Rick Atkinson (1 Viewer)

Thanks for posting Brad. First I've heard of this. Thoroughly enjoyed his WWII trilogy and look fwd to the new series. For those interested, Ian Tull's WWII 3 vol (1st two published) war in the Pacific is as good, I think, for that theater as the Atkinson work.

While checking out the link you provided, I see David McCullough has a new book, The Pioneers, also due in May. Chris

Following on his formula (apparently) that he used for WW II, Atkinson has written volume 1, entitled The British Are Coming: The War for America, Lexington to Princeton, 1775-1777. The publication date is May 14.

My American Revolution library has a good quantity of books by dozens of authors.
I wonder what new material Atkinson will contribute that hasn't been presented previously? :rolleyes2:

Only one way to find out …. BUY THE BOOK.
Looking forward to finding out.

Many thanks, Brad for the "heads-up".

Probably very little... Sometimes though a new fresh look can reinvigorate interpretations of sources that have been previously visited. I'm looking forward to reading it as well.

I would have thought the same for the war in Europe Larry. But Atkinson's trilogy was outstanding and he was awarded the Pulitzer prize for the 1st volume. Hope this series will be as good. Chris

For good or ill, there have been some "populist" historians over the years that have generated wider interest in historical subjects among those who would not ordinarily read them. The likes of Stephen Ambrose and David McCullough (and even gasp Bill O'Reilly) have large followings. They are looking for best sellers with all that entails. Atkinson is more akin to a journalist. He falls somewhere between the populist and academic. Which means his books are well written and researched but aren't academic text books. More for the person with a moderate background in the subject matter who wants an enjoyable read to learn some new things than the academic.

My wife checked this out of the library for me. About 60 pages in and find it very well done so far, lots of interesting little details I never thought or knew about. -- Al

I recently read "The British are Coming" by Atkinson and enjoyed it. Very easy and interesting reading. I believe I have read over 100 books on the American Revolution and this is one of the best.
Great summer reading!

I enjoyed it as well. Very similar in style to his WWII trilogy. What stood out for me was highlighting the enormous logistical difficulties of supplying an army in the field during the 18th century. I'm not sure how they did it. The amount of food and supplies necessary were staggering. Just feeding the horses was a task.

Rick Atkinson is going to be at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA on Weds. Sept. 18 if there is anyone in that area who wants to hear him speak and get a signed copy. These are open to the public. I imagine it will be crowded. They also post these events on You Tube after the fact:

I recently read this one as well and also enjoyed it. Now, to wait 3-4 yrs for the next volume...:rolleyes2:

You might enjoy Washington's Crossing by David Fischer. Encompasses the entire Jersey campaign and thought it quite good. Chris

Am about halfway through the book and am so impressed. Never intended to read this
trilogy because I wasn't very interested in the Revolutionary War but am glad I did-if nothing
else but for Atkinson's superb writing(style)-it's just amazing and IMHO even tops
the Liberation Trilogy.
