I just found a website where (if you have a 3d printer) you can download files to print several sets of really nice toy soldiers. Not the blurry, blocky designs of the past, either. These figures look just as good if not better than many sets sold commercially today. They have knights, samurai, Vietnam or Cold War era troops, modern female US soldiers and modern rebel (terrorist) female soldiers. If you are a member of the site, you can download the files for free, if not they are about 2-3$ per file. You can print them out in any scale you want. They say it takes about 2 hours to print one figure. The surface is a little rough in places, but it looks like they would clean up easily. Certainly much better than earlier 3d printed soldiers I have seen.

I really want to get a 3d printer now. I think this is the beginning of what we all have been waiting for!

Not too bad, in a few years there should be more of this and it will be lot better.

This. These types of places are going to make an awful lot of Toy Soldier manufacturers very unhappy for a while, but I can imagine the two "dovetailing" eventually.

I can't paint "AT ALL" so useless for someone like me,if i could i would build and paint everything hence the reason i buy TS in the first place.

You just need a $3000 least high quality printer plus software and else. Spooler cost not less than 75.00 and give you x few pieces each.
very slow x production, machine need from 30 to 45 minutes every piece done cool off and spend plenty power
Unless you want spend that much to make you own dream...
good luck on it...:eek:
:salute::

You don't need to buy a 3D printer to do this. It's going to be easier to print your sculpts or designs that you make by using companies like https://www.sculpteo.com/en/. A person or company can have their designs uploaded here to sell, a person will click on the model they want then it is printed and shipped to their house. Sculpteo does all the work once your design is uploaded, you make a commission on the sell of the item. I can see people or small companies doing this or larger companies using sculpteo to make large orders to then resell. Right now it is not cost efficient to do, but one day it will.

The quality will still not be that great and will require a fair amount of cleanup. Looking at the pricing they are going to work out about the same as buying AIP, etc per figure once you include the cost of printing.

I have recently bought a fairly high-end printer (£1300) for printing ABS plastic parts and am using it to design and print masters for vehicle kits (just remade the springs,seat and side bars for a GS Wagon which will be coming out soon) but I wouldn't thing about printing out figures at even this quality.

Hi Mike
There is certainly a lot of development when it comes to 3D printing quality these days but you got to refer to the beginnings and the first available 3D prints. I have tried and tested 6 different companies over the last 6-7 years all of them own terribly expensive state of the art 3D-printers but still the resulting 3D prints are a far cry from what I really want quality wise. Single parts like tool or ammo boxes etc. can be done in pleasing quality and the newer generation of DLP printers are really good when it comes to surface quality but for more complex parts or a human likeness I am still unhappy with the results. Who knows what can be achieved next year or the year after....... but honestly they keep saying this for the last 10 years. {sm2}

To see what can be done with 3D printing look at Reed Oak, https://www.facebook.com/reedoakmodels/ They 3D scan reenactors and print the resulting figures in several scales, 1/48, 1/35, 1/32, etc, etc.13710540_1172406932800619_2595785423781435047_o.jpg Yes, expensive now, but like all emerging technologies the prices will come down.

Wow :) Thanks Bid_kahuna

its fun to see someone appreciate the hard work we put into this collection.
They were all sculpted from scratch so they are unique too. (and exclusively found only on our site)
and just so you know, though not optimal, they do come out pretty nice looking on an M3D (around $300)
The prints you see on the website were done on a MakerBot rep 2 (4 year old printer) and at medium resolution, not highest.

few clarifications :)
The female soldiers set are not necessarily US (nor are the guys), but any imagined Western modern army.
We made them to have a more balanced toy set for kids, especially girls who don't get many options for war toys.

The Rebel Girls (and soon Guys) are not terrorists (unless you want to use them for that in your play) they are just that, rebels.
Terrorists attack civilians... these guys are more like a militia, fighting against better armed forces with spirit and bravery :)

I remember as a child playing with my toy soldiers and always having to use western armies as the "good guys" , why not have an evil modern army against freedom fighting rebels?

We are adding more of them in our updates, and I believe all armies are not complete yet on our website.

Again, thanks for the compliments and kind words.
knowing we made someone buy a 3D printer is a huge satisfaction every time. its why we started doing this in the first place.

In the UK there is this company...........you can get yourself scanned :D http://www.modelu3d.co.uk/

Currently looks like model railway figures but I think they can make and scale. Once painted they look quite effective. I know a few have people sold to friends on a model railway forum I am member of. The scannee ?? has become a bit of a model celebrity.

Someone I know thru work is getting a 3D printer, at his office. Cost is about $200K. ^&cool Chris

Nice figures. Look forward to seeing more from you in the future. Any chance of you doing some WW2, Korean War, or Viet Nam war figures?
