I'm in the process of buying the excellent Scots Dragoon Guards limited editions from last year and I must say they are some of the best mounted glossies I've ever seen! The reins on the drum horse are amazing so detailed compared to the glossies of the past. Has anybody else bought any of these yet? Believe me you won't be disapointed!

I was wondering if we might get some mounted trumpeters this year? Or even better a pipes & drums band to go with them? It could be done as a limited edition set or as individual redcoats that you can build up over time?

How is your painting going Craig? If you are progressing - and you fancy it - these come as castings from Dorset Soldiers.
Painted as Circa 1897 - they might be good for an early version of the Regiment in your collection. Start with the figures at the rear (Escort) to practice, and do them a couple at a time - and take your time - and they could look rather nice?

PS Thanks for posting the photos - as I have copied them for some possible future project - johnnybach

Hi JB my painting is going ok thanks think I've got the hang of it :) I haven't really done much in the last few months due to not having the time or space to do it! To much christmas decorations around the place lol

The dorset casting are nice but I'm still hopeing Britains add to there sets as I like the modern detailed look the new Britains Redcoats & Limited Edition sets have!

Hi Craig - yes - I understand what you say. The beauty of castings though, is that you can paint them in any style that you like. If you get a chance, try and do a casting ( or even a plastic figure), in the Britains style that you prefer. It may take you a while to get it - but if you do................. you really willl be LOL..!!!

Hi Craig
I would love to see a better Pipes and Drums also. They are the best Pipes and Drums(Playing wise Grade 2) in the British army. The history of the Reg ,everything about it is class.I`m hopeing to pick up those figures soon.My pennies have been going to The War on the Nile.In 1988 I moved over to Scotland to join the RSDG.I passed the playing part for the pipes and drums but I meet my soon to be wife there so that kind of went out the window.I`ll take a look for my pictures from the Tattoo I was in.I know I have some of the RSDG.Great group of guys.
Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave, any photos you can add will be great :) I did try to find some photos of the RSDG band with the plum that went all the way over the top like the drummer but couldn't find any! Plenty of the pipe band though lol

I never realised that you lived over in Scotland for a time? Or that you planned on joining the RSDG? How many different Pipe & Drum Bands have you been in now?

Craig

Haven't a photo of the plume going over the top of the cap Craig - but I just love this old Xmas Card of two trumpeters by Harry Payne - which shows it off a treat. You can easily convert a casting to this - by using a little "Sausage of milliput" - and then working on the surface with a toothpick to make it rough-up. Hope it helps. jb

That's an excellent picture on the christmas card JB! Couldn't find any trumpeter photos online at all so that's great!

Ducal made a very nice RSDG dismounted band that I occasionally see on Ebay

Yes - it's a favourite of mine. If ever you can't find a photo - don't forget to check out Artist Prints web-sites - or even Google Images. You can sometimes turn up things like that card. Harry Payne and Richard Simkins were Victorian artists who specialised in drawing and painting Miltary subjects - which are frequently very useful for painters like us.;) jb^&grin

Here you go, Craig, hope it is of some help. Trooper

Thanks Trooper that's just the photo I was looking for! If Britains did a set like that in the new detailed Redcoats style id be verry happy! We really do need some add ons to compliment the excellent mounted sets from last year!

I collect the 7YW glossies ( and have to be strict in this regard given some lofty ambitions about which more in the fairly near future) but I have to say that these Scots Dragoon Guards really caught my eye when I saw them recently. Absolutely beautiful.

They also had another impact - the bases for the horses. The mounted infantry officers in the Redcoats / FIW / 7YW ranges ride baseless horses which makes them a) unstable and b) out of step with the foot. The bases of these SDG models are juast the thing and WB should apply them to all future glossy cavalry releases
(of which there are far too few ;)
