The Vikings are coming!!! (1 Viewer)

Very nice 54mm Viking figures are on Ebay, from Russia and Ukraine. Painted for $40.00 to $60.00, unpainted $10.00 to $20.00! Since Conte went out of business, W.Britains are the only 54-60mm Vikings in production at this time. Conte sets are still available on Ebay.

Russians and Ukrainians are very interested in Vikings; as it is their heritage. Swedish Vikings founded Kiev and Russ is the Slavic word for Viking.

I usually don't like FL's stock photos but these really look good.

They certainly look great, but the breadth of what FL is offering is so great, that there is not so much depth, with the exception of Napoleon's Europe. Consider the number of releases with these new ranges: Thirty Years War has only 6 figures, Vikings only 7, the Wild West only 7. I was hoping that FL would start increasing the number of WW2 releases. It's hard to believe there is only a single US vehicle available, the jeep. I have become a big fan of FL over the past year but I wish they would go deeper in the existing ranges before adding so many new ones.

I wonder who their foes will be?

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking but Anglos and Saxons were their foes, as were the Franks. The Normans were descendants of Vikings and it was the Normans who conquered England in 1066.

King Alfred might interest me as a figure.

They also spent a lot of time fighting each other.

I had a kit put together of the left part of that painting with Olaf Tryggsson and his men making a last stand.

If and when they are released; they can be combined with the W. Britains Vikings and Saxons to fill out the Shield Wall. The Vikings had many foes; Harald Hardrada when leader of the Varangian Guard fought the Saracens on Sicily. The Vikings also fought Indians in North America. The Vikings called them Skraelings in the Sagas. The Irish Celts were worthy foes of the Vikings as were the Scots. Six Drakkers sailed up the river to Edinburgh and one sailed back. The Carolians were also enemys of the Vikings. Charles the Fat the Carolian King ceded Normandy to Rollo a Viking Chieftan and this became the origin of the Normans. Swedish Vikings fought the Slavs and founded the city of Keiv. The Slavs called the Vikings the Russ; the origin of Medieval Russia. A list of Viking foes is very long and very wide spread; from North America to the Black Sea. Viking Runes are carved into the wood of Sancta Sophia Bacillica in Constanstinople. A Viking grave contained a small jade statue of the Budda. Fun to imagine where that Viking had traveled to over 1100 years ago!

Great painting by the late great Angus Mcbride :salute::. His book on the Vikings is well worth a look for anyone with interest in the subject and a wonderful addition to any Library.

Its really fun to see collectors getting excited about a new line which also has the power of sparking research, The Varangian Guard would make for a great spin off line ^&grin. By the way there is a cool documentary on netflixs about them I watched it a while back, its in with the series of elite units or something like that.

These figures really look nice and the slower pace of release works for me just fine, I'm already spread way too thin. :redface2: but I certainly understand the other point of view.

I don't really have an interest in the Vikings per se - I think they are a bunch of "mouth-breathing knuckledraggers" - but these figures are beautiful! Well done First Legion.

Cheers,

Brendan

The Vikings were explorers and traders as well as raiders; they effectivly redrew the map of Europe and discovered Iceland, Greenland and North America. The Viking Longship was one of the most beautiful and efficient ships ever invented and enabled their great discoveries predating Columbus by 500 years! Just a few of the historic accomplishnents of the Norse mouth breathing knuckle draggers.

Visit the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo sometime; it may change your opinion of the Norse!

Certainly they had some accomplishments, but I'd argue overall their influence was ephemeral.

Brenden,

That is how the Vikings are often depicted. I'm sure you'd see things differently if you had a chance to visit the museum Katana mentioned.

FL has done a good job on several fronts including WWII Eastern Front, Napoleonic regiments and American Civil War.
I agree, however, that they can add much more depth to other series. For example; Mounted French knights for Agincourt, Swiss pike for the Renaissance, Hessians and more Colonial regiments for the American Revolution, American armor for WWII, etc....
But all in all they cover so many great eras and battles and I just wish the intervals between releases for some series would be more timely. We collectors often lack patience!

BHogan;
Iceland and Greenland still exist and their populations are of Norse decent. No one disputes their discovery of North America. The Viking Longship and the Laminated Steel Sword are considerd some of the best early medieval inventions and samples exist in museums in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and England. The cities of Cork, Limerick, Keiv et.al. were founded by the Vikings. I would say their footprints in history remain to this day!

Thank you FL!
At (very) long last - three of these figures are forming a realistic shield wall.
I hope many more figures in this vein will join them.........

If anyone is interested in an original Conte Viking ship with all the "metal" rowers please PM me......
Reasonably priced!
