Off to a good start. One question I have to ask is I know the Vikings raided the British Isles for over 200 years but were the Saxons that poor as warriors.I thought they were much betters than they are being portrayed.

I just started watching season one and it's pretty entertaining. Not quite the level of sex and violence from Black Sails or other similar histo-dramas, but the acting and settings are great. I understand it is filmed in Ireland which was a surprise. Yes, the Saxons are like the zombies in the Walking Dead. Not very threatening to the main cast of characters. Is this series related to the Bernard Cornwell's set of Viking books? I read somewhere they were making that into a series but couldn't recall if this was it.

They are making a series on his books.I had a thread awhile back on it.

At the time depicted, I believe that the Vikings were simply raiders. They showed up and overwhelmed the locals. By the time that the Saxons raised a force of any size to resist them, the Vikings would have boarded their vessels and sailed on down the coast to the next settlement unfortunate enough to receive such a visit. Over a period of centuries, cultures like that of the Saxons were severely weakened by the ongoing depredation of raids and forced tribute. Because of this, the Vikings were able to settle permanently in many areas, Normandy for instance. Normans were French-speaking Vikings.

I think the Vikings success was due to avoiding fights against properly organised opponents. I read an article recently which revealed/argued that in proper battles the Viking's lost more than they won.

Starting to watch this interesting tv series. I just read that Lindesfarne, which was featured in the series, was located on an island.

I started binge watching season 3 this week and it's excellent. Lots of great character actors and action.

I have read this as well.

Really one of the most base tenants of War, throughout time and across all geography. The methods change and evolve but recognizing an enemies strength and weaknesses, hitting them at there weakest point is just good business. {sm4}

Actually Normandie (whose name comes from North Man) was the land given to the Vikings by the King of France around 900 so they stop raiding that country. The last episode of Vikings Season 3 illustrates this event. This is a great show indeed with good acting and relatively good rendering of the Vikings' society and way of life (including raiding tactics).

"War Never Ends"...

it looks brutal...

I am a patient man. I prefer waiting for the Blu-Ray version of the season (October 2016). No commercial cuts and better picture...

For me this is better than the Walking dead now it just gets better and better.

I ve watched 2 and will catch up this weekend. Great show.

I like this show a lot but I'm either getting burned out or things are a bit slow this season. They now have basically three story lines going. England, Paris, and the Vikings. Two or which have little to do with the Vikings so far this season. Still watching but I hope the action picks up.

tough episode...

I root for the vikings...hahaha...

the character...Harbard....I haven't got a grip on who he really is...

is he Odin in earth form?

didn't they mention that on a previous show...that Harbard was a Viking alias for Odin?

whoever he is...

it appears it's his job to service the Viking warrior's wives while the men are in Paris or England...

he always sniffs them out when the men are gone and shows up eager to please...
