Saw this one again courtesy of Netflix last night; how Mickey did not win the oscar is beyond me, I guess to be anyone in Hollywood these days and win awards, you have to be outspoken like Penn is.

Just a brilliant performance, he played the character with such believability, it was amazing. The deli scenes were my personal favorites, but the entire movie is a joy to watch.................

I agree, Rourke was nothing short of amazing, and should have won the Oscar. This movie and The Dark Knight were the two best films of the year in my opinion.

If you're a fan of Mickey Rourke, watch the Pope of Grenwich Village, his best work ever, in my opinion, but then, I have not seen the wrestler.:D

The Wrestler is on the top of my list of movies yet to see. I saw Benjamin Buttons which was the last movie I saw this year. It was good, very long, some boring moments. The movie is in the same style as Forrest Gump. I think it was made by the same producer.

Interesting that you say Forrest Gump. That is exactly how my son and his wife described the movie to me, "very much like Forrest Gump". The similarity must be striking. -- lancer

Yes I saw it, Mickey Rourke plays a drunk has been wrestler......big stretch.

He plays a rotten father, a loser that can't pay his rent, with nothing to

show for his life.

Its one of those inspirational, quality of life films, that certainly should have

won an Oscar for its wonderful contribution to society?

I got it via Redbox for $1..........I can afford to throw away $1.

I would not recommend this piece of garbage to an enemy.:D

I do not dislike Mickey Rourke.....after all he did make Harley Davidson and

the Marlboro Man. At least that one had motocycles.:D

Mickey Rourke is a great actor. He has never been recognized, though. I guess the Academy is waiting his 85th birthday to give him a life achievment award...

That kind of thing happens, you know?
:(

Cheers...

I agree, I think he is pretty good.

His career started out so well, I loved Barflys and The Pope of Grenwich Village, but he really fell apart for a while.

Steroids and boxing dominated his life for a while.

I'm glad to see he is making a come back.

Yes he was also a great fighter.:D

He kept trying to knock his opponents out with his chin.:D

He has stated he would rather win a champsionship then an Oscar.:)

Isn't it interesting how many successful people want to do something else!

I'm certain many of us would be quite pleased to earn many millions of dollars

for acting in a movie!

If they ever make the "Life and times of Wallace Beery" wife says I'm a shoe in!

What do you think?

I thought he said that out of spite. I mean, he must know the Academy won't give him an Oscar...

No actually I don't see him as a spiteful person. I saw the interview and he

really liked boxing. He said given the choice he would rather win a boxing

championship then an Oscar, I believe him.

Boxing and ultimate fighting are more brutal then most people realize. In high

school I wrestled and they made us wear ear protection. In college I did

Karate and you were not allowed to strike from the knees down or neck up.

Check out UFC Former Hwt Champ Randy Coutures ears. A blow to the

ear can bust the blood vessels which may be repaired once.....a severe blow

or additional injury and you have this to deal with!

Boxing is brutal, no doubt about it. Mickey Rourke would have won a belt if he boxed like he acts. Just my two cents on the subject.
;)

Here in Brazil we call ears like those jiujitsu ears, or tatame ears. All UFC Brazilian guys look like that! That's an insanely brutal sport!

Don't hold back John, tell us all how you really feel.

You missed the entire point the movie was trying to make.

Thanks for your wonderful contribution to this thread.

George:

The point of a Forum is to express your opinions is it not?

As a father, family man, succesfully retired I fail to see any socially

redeeming quality in this movie.

What was the great message? Think only of yourself, ignore your children,

don't pay your bills, abuse your body until it gives out.......but be cool in

your own mind?

In these difficult economic times, men should be encouraged to stand up to

their responsibiilites especially to their familys. A lesson this character failled

to learn. Then when given one more chance......again he blew it in a drunken

stupor.

Unfortunately Mickey Rourke's life is a mirror image of the movie. Which is a

shame, certainly gifted to reach his level of success do you see a confident

man happy with his situation surrounded by a loving family?

Isn't that a better image for our country and men in general?

Just my opinion.:D

Yeah, sure John, the point of the forum is to express opinions.

The movie is about ones fall from grace, how some people in life try desperately to hold onto their past, their past glories, triumps, etc, etc. Sometimes it's a result of ego, sometimes it's a result of not knowing any other way of life. You dance with who brung you; pro athletes do it all the time, they hold on too long, past their prime because they don't want to face reality. You thought "The Ram" was just trying to be cool? He pumped up other wrestlers, offered advice to them and encouragement, he was far from just trying to be cool.

Another point the movie tried to make is if you get a second chance in life (ie, him and his daughter), don't screw it up.

Noones perfect John, we all have flaws.

It also shows us that we as human beings need others in our life, noone and I mean noone wants to be alone. He pursued the stripper character, she rejected him and when she finally let her guard down and was there for him, all he cared about was recapturing his glory; instead of walking out of the arena with the girl, he probably was carried out in a body bag.

I thought the ACTING was brilliant. Sometimes, the story grabs me (Schindlers List), sometimes the action grabs me (Saving Private Ryan), sometimes the acting grabs me (The Wrestler), sometimes it's a combination of the above.

In this case, the story and it's message and the acting did.

I feel sorry for you that you don't get it.

I think you have an issue with Rourke more than the movie itself IMO; sorry if he's done something in his life you find offensive.

George, you certainly read a lot into that movie.

You feel sorry for me? Why? that is a bigger colossal waste of time

then this movie. I couldn't be happer if I won the lottery:D To be honest I usually don't

even botter playing:p unless I happen to be buying a paper. That pay at the

pump really kills the human contact at the gas station.

As far as Mickey Rourke goes as I stated earlier I liked "Harley Davidson and

the Marlboro Man" I also like Don Johnson, and Mel Gibson.

I become disappointed when I see successful men like these make a mess of

their lives. Nothing personal, I just believe when you are given so much....you

should act responsibily.:D:)

Every once and awhile, a movie comes along that grabs me, it has nothing to do with reading into a movie and it's message.

Saving Private Ryan, Schindlers List, The Departed, The Wrestler, Goodfellas; movies that grabbed me.

They don't come along often IMO.

One mans trash is another mans treasure as they say........

A common thread with successful Athletes, Actors and even military Generals is a high degree of self belief but often this is combined with an underlying feeling of inadequacy. For example Montgomery and Patton both had high pitched almost unmanly voices. I don't know what personal problems Micky Rourke has, but I guess the guy is doing the best he can with what he got dealt, maybe we should just respect the guy for that - a fellow human - not an ideal.
