There's a community of 1/6th collectors here in the US, too, including guys who repaint and detail figures and build dioramas, though I haven't seen any dios as big as these. There was a group who set up at Ed Gries' PA Toy Soldier Show in Langhorne for a couple of years.
There's also "armormodelerguy" at FineScale--I think that's his handle--he builds super-detailed 1/6 armor kits, with a lot of scratchbuilding. His website is at http://eastcoastarmory.com/index.htm. I think he's located here in PA, upstate, and he comes to the NJ IPMS club's Mosquitocon shows.
1/6 is an interesting area to get into, for the modeler/painter. It's a whole new world, to work in such a larger scale. I may dig my old GI Joes out of storage someday and make something with them, Prussian cuirassiers from 1870, perhaps.
