Le Marchant, John Gaspard (1766 - 22 July 1812), British Major General and commander of Dragoons in the Peninsula who was killed at Salamanca. One of the finest cavalry commanders of the period, known for many contributions to the British Army, including the design of a cavalry saber, a manual of swordsmanship, the founding the first British military academy and the single most effective charge by a single brigade of the entire Napoleonic period.
