On ANZAC Day, we remember men and women & also the #animals who stood beside them.
#Dogs were messengers, sentries, and companions—offering comfort in the darkest of trenches.
#Donkeys, like the legendary one led by Private John Simpson, carried the wounded through dangerous terrain with unwavering courage.
Even #cats found their place aboard navy ships, keeping morale high and pests low.
These animals didn’t wear medals, but their loyalty, bravery, and companionship left pawprints on history.
Today, we honour all who served—two-legged and four.

Hey Wayne,

what about the Kangaroo???

Many Australian units brought kangaroos and other Australian animals with them to Egypt, and some were given to the Cairo Zoological Gardens when the units went to Gallipoli.

In 1943 Britain created the Dickin Medal, named after Mary Dickin, who founded the RSPCA, an animal Charity. The first recipients were 3 pigeons, who on 3 seperate occasions delivered a message which led to the rescue of 3 different RAF crew who had ditched in sea. The final award was to a US Military Dog named Bass [Belgian Malinois] for his service in Afganistan in 2019.
