These are really nice. What is with the logs on the sides? Are there any details on the inside?

No details on the inside.

The logs are refered as ditching or unditching beams and are used to provide additional traction for the tracks in soft ground.

Here is a picture of a T-72 with a ditching beam mounted on the hull rear.

the crews are optional add-on items with add-on costs, and the hatches are optional to be open or closed, but once fixed, they can't be moved.

Seems to me having opening hatches would be a handy thing. Especially with dio building.
