To paint or not to paint.... (1 Viewer)

uksubs...

So many to choose and your citation is a good one but, apart from photos I have in my own collection and sometimes the internet some good ones for the SS are:

SS A rmour on the eastern front 43 -45 Velimir Vuksic

Endkampf um das reichsgebeit final battles of the reich 44-45 Axel Urbanke

Panzerschlacht Armoured operations on the Hungarian Plains Sept/Nov 44-45

Hi all -

I have been thinking about changing my 1917 British soldiers to a different regiment. I wanted to represent soldiers of the 1st Rifle Brigade, a regiment that my great uncle was in on the Somme offensives of 1916.

This means painting new battle insignia and painting the buttons black. Not too difficult, but I have a dilemma...will this undermine their value? Not that I am going to sell them anytime soon, but later on in life, I may need a hip replacement. Well you know what I mean.

Just wanted to know if anyone else has done something like this.

To answer your question: I do it all the time.I make small dio's with K&C figurines and I want these dio's to be historically correct. This means that from time to time I have to adapt my figurines to the battle scenes I want to create.Canadians become Brits, 82nd airborne becomes 101st.I always repaint my figurines completely, battle insignia included. The K&C figurines are marvelous, but to my opinion a bit too neat to be used into a battle scene.Look out for the pictures of two new small dio's I will put on Treefrog next week, all K&C figurines, including the vehicle have been repainted completely

There some great books Mitch
When do you think your King tigers will be ready ?

Interesting stuff here, guys, and I would love to see those Tigers, Mitch.

From my point of view, as a purist or, well, whatever you care to call it - I'm sure there are nastier ways to put it - I would never repaint or alter a figure/ vehicle, unless I had a double.
That may change, in time. If something is coming out, that belongs to a unit I respect, or grudingly admire (depending on their nationalities), I see it as a bonus.
I guess it depends on your background too. If you are a gamer, or play with miniatures, painting and altering your units is probably second nature.

Having said all that - I'm just imagining a unit of 4-5 AFVs, differently numbered, but all from the same unit.
:) (My daughter, who is 5, is reading this over my shoulder and insisting I add all these faces).
 :) :D:p

(P.S. She is thrilled with the result)

uksubs.

Got some work in the garden needs doing but, I am hoping to get both done in about a week to ten days max.

Are you hand painting or spraying the tanks Mitch ?

uksubs...

I nearly always hand paint. I have an Awati airbrush system but, prefer to hand paint. Thats the way I started out and still prefer it I can also sit anywhere in the house and hand paint with an airbrush its setting up the extractor fan etc and its a pain.

I like airbrushes but, rend to use mine for primarily ground work and buildings. The only real time I use one on AFV's is painting camo on german tanks as it looks better faded in but, still have seen some badly painted tanks by hand in real pictures.

You should seriously think of painting different faces on each of your AFVs...just think how thrilled your daughter would be?! :D

To reiterate they are your soldiers by all means do what you will. You may lose value unless they are superbly done. I have seen a few repaints go for more than the MSRP. It was a nicely done russian tank.

I myself just repainted a K&C ACW figure(early series) and loads of Britains' and Conte figures as part of a large commission.
