It is more and more that I get drawn to the "glossy" side of our hobby and would like to share my latest aquisition, which is a Set by "Tradition of London".
This particular set is one of their Christmas releases which they bring out since 2001 now. Every year they announce the new release around October or early November and then the molds of the set are broken on the 31st of December that year.
So only as many sets as were ordered during those 2 or 2 1/2 month are made.
This Christmas Set of 2005 is showing Marlborough's Infantry, 1702 - 1711, an Officer is there along with a Drummer, two Grenadiers and two Musketeers.

If anybody else has some pictures of his Tradition Sets and would like to share them here, it would be appreciated.

Happy Collecting!

And I haven't gotten myself a good digital camera yet, argh!

Yes, we've extolled the quality of these Tradition castings. The factory paint is pretty good, and Jeff has shown the extra detail that you can add to the figures, beyond what the factory provides.

I've got some of the Seven Years War British, which I've finished painting, plus a couple more kits to put together; some of the Seven Years War French, to give the Brits and Prussians something to shoot at, those are awaiting painting; and also some of the Imperial Germans, the Foot Guard fifes and drums, and a dragoon kettledrummer, all started but not yet finished.

The Imperial Germans are part of a display that I put up sometimes at Christmas, with the Alexander Grenadiers by Guard Corps, with the Kaiser and the review party taking the salute. The Charles Biggs Field Artillery in review order provide some saluting pieces.

Prost, Konrad!

Hi Brad,
your Imperial German display sounds great. You should put it up this Christmas again and then you need to put a good digitial camera on your wishlist. That should work out together ;)

The camel that Jeff painted for me was Tradition and it's a very nice casting, not to mention expertly painted:)

I love Tradition, have all of the Xmas specials as well as the limited edition specials. Also a good bit of ACW and Napoleonic. The devaluing of the dollar is not kind to us in the USA though, get the older sets now at a nice discount from your dealer stock (that is the best advice I can give to those on the fence). Anyway, these sets are personal favorites and wonderful quality>

Anyone have any pictures of these Christmas Specials?

Oh yeah, I remember those now. What do Romans have to do with Christmas? I like the Napoleonic ones. They happened in the snow at least. I like some of the Christmasier sets I have seen from John Eden or the like.;)

What do Romans have to do with Christmas? Well, we can look no further than this:

"And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child."

I know the place, Nazareth is just a couple of miles up the road from me ;)

Prost!

I was refering to the Holiday itself. Biblical refrences aside. But when credit is due! Good one.

I know ;)

Maybe we could put a Santa hat on the centurion...

Actually, if the 25th really were the correct date, those Romans would be getting ready for Saturnalia, wouldn't they?

I'm not really that much of a Biblical scholar, but maybe someone out there knows whether the real scholars have fixed the real date of Christ's birth more closely. I do recall having read that most historians agree that it wasn't our current year 0, but within a year or two, either way.

And as far as our date goes for Christmas (Christ's mass), a significant factor for the early Church in placing it in the calendar was to replace pagan solstice festivals (like Saturnalia, and the Germanic winter festivals).

I also recall someone pointing out that it had to have been summer or early fall, because in winter in the Holy Land, while there may not be snow on the ground, it can get quite cold at night, and no shepherds would have been out in the fields at night at that time.

This could be an interesting discussion....

Prosit!
Brad

The R/C Church took a page from the Roman Empire adopting holidays and local dieties as Saints. Fun Stuff. Christmas hat on a legionaire. He He.

I like the look of these Tradition figures. I like their subject line up particularly FIW. The Christmas set in this thread are also very impressive. However the photographs which generally feature on retail websites are of a poor quality and do not invite purchase. Can anyone describe the quality say compared to Britains glossy?

The painted figures are roughly equivalent to Britain's gloss. I think this is in large part because of the quality of the castings. Tradition's castings are consistently superb. If you paint your own, and haven't yet bought any of Tradition's figures, take a look at some at your favorite vendor's shop and see, I think most of us would agree.

Even in Tradition's traditional toy soldier range, they are roughly equivalent to Britain's original figures, but then, I think that that was the intent behind the line, to capture the look of traditional toy soldiers.

Prost!

Hello Davout71,
I agree with Brad (theBaron) and would say that the Tradition figures are similiar in style to the quality and size of the current glossy Britains items. If you look at the Traditional glossy Artillery thread on this forum you can find some pictures I posted where I put a Tradition FIW artillery set (custom painted by a forum member) together with the Britains FIW artillery set. That will give you a good comparison sizewise.
As of the quality of the Tradition figures here are a few more photos of some more Christmas Sets.
1. The Rearguard (Retreat from Russia)
2. The 95th Rifles (Retreat to Corunna)
3. The French Foreign Legion (1980's)
A lot of the manufacturer's photos do not do their pieces justice and I absolutely don't get it. Why don't they put the most possible effort in bringing out the best of their figures?
A lot of photos from forum members will give you a better idea.
Happy Collecting!

Thanks for the comment. The pics also look fantastic. I should like to make a purchase at some stage. The postage to NZ and a re-surgent US dollar may hold me back for a little while.
