My son, Alec, my best friend, Morgan and I spent the last 4 days at Antietam and the surrounding battlefields at Harper's Ferry and South Mountain. The National Park Service Tour Guide, Chris, was great, we met up with Tom Dubel, and had dinner with him at a great German place called the Bavarian Inn right across the river in West Virginia. The battlefield is really well preserved (although somewhat overgrown with trees that were not on the farmland at the time of the battle). Here are some photos of the 14th Brooklyn Monument (at the Cornfield), the Cornfield, Alec in the Sunken Road, and me on the Burnside Bridge:

Louis, what did you think about the Confederate defensive position overlooking the Burnside bridge?

This one? I think a competent Union commander would have shelled the heck out of it as his infantry moved up and took the bridge, but it isn't called the Burnside Bridge for nothing!:rolleyes2:

Glad to see you had such fine weather, with a break in the usual Maryland humidity. It is astounding the difference in the popularity/development between the Sharpsburg battlefield and that of Gettysburg, so close nearby. The crowds are quite different, as well. Nice pics. -- Al

I have not visited the civil war battlefields since the 70s as a child. That DC and the Williamsburg and the like. I have been wanting to go back for a few years now, so I am really jealous of you and Tom. Looks like a fun trip.

A great trip Louis. Antietam is still one of the better Civil War battlefields to visit. It's mostly undisturbed by any changes or development. You can get a real sense of the various phases of the battle from being there. Harper's Ferry is also a great place to visit. Very scenic and historical. John Brown is a character from history whose legacy probably hasn't been sufficiently vetted. Imagine living in a time of slavery and recognizing the inherent evils in that system but being on wrong side of the law at that time? Most people just adhered to the societal norms rather than risk arrest or death. An interesting character.

Louis,
it was a true pleasure seeing, dining and visiting with y'all. Growing up around there, Antietam always holds a special place as Washington County is home to many of my family and ancestors! Thanks for letting me tag along for the afternoon and evening, I had not seen South Mountain Battlefield in at least a decade. I am just happy the food lived up to the billing!

Tom

Louis, glad you had such a wonderful trip. Your pics brought back some fond memories of visits to the battlefield. BTW, AL/Lancer and I were both at the centennial re-enactment (if my memory is correct). And yes, we are that old! {eek3} Chris

Chris, I still remember that re-enactment and how hot it was. I was absolutely enthralled by it, all the action, uniforms, so many men, it was a great thing for a kid to see. My gosh, it was so long ago. -- Al
