A Trophy Alamo facade set just sold on EBAY.
Just curious as to how many Alamo facade sets were produced by Trophy.

Are you talking about the 34 piece set, which included the facade, that sold for over 5K?

I think the only people who would know how many were made would be Tommy Allison (but he doesn’t post anymore since he sold his Trophy collection), Boerboy (Alex) or Tom Dubel. I’d have to think they were few.

I’m guessing you collect Alamo. The only people I know who have any (besides you) are Tom Dubel, Alex, Knights1212 and myself (although I may be selling mine); I have 15 sets. I rarely see them on eBay anymore.

i thought i heard once that there were 6 or 12. Hard to believe the set went for over $5000. I bid what i thought was a generous $2682 which is way more than costing the individual pieces out. Was there really a 34 piece set or did this person kust put it together for sale that way?

She listed them out by set.

Actually, it was a fluke on eBay — the set was sold for $5,200+, but later the high bidder informed the seller about the glitch, and they relisted it as a $5K Buy It Now.

What they were selling was a collection of Alamo sets — none of them were rare, with the exception of the very scarce Alamo facade with walls, in the box. Aside from that set, the total value of the other sets would be under $1,400 on a very good day.

As far as I know, Len originally produced just the facade, and later, at Mike Laeding's request, he commissioned a facade with walls, made by Dragon Crest. Nobody knows for sure how many were made, but the guess is between 50 and 100. It’s definitely a very desirable set in the U.S., but not worth $3.5K in my opinion.

But as they say — it’s worth as much as someone is willing to pay!

I’m going to have to disagree somewhat. No doubt the facade was a big driver of the price but as to the figures this ain’t 10 years ago where there might be a lot of Trophy on eBay. Alamo figures just don’t show up a lot on eBay. In the last several months there were only two other auctions. Moreover, the seller had some nice sets such as TX 12, which you don’t often see. Some of them might not be rare but since Alamo are rare on eBay, that makes them rare.

The Alamo range looks great, but I have not dabbled into that range yet.

Brad,

You are right — they don't surface very often. I just checked eBay records, and TX12 sold four times in the last four years, with a median price of $200.

But you also need to take into consideration how many Trophy collectors are out there willing to pay big bucks — compared to K&C, Figarti, Britains, Fist Legion and others, not as many. And many of those collectors already have the main pieces and are just trying to locate a few missing ones.

In my view, demand for Trophy and other traditional toy soldiers will continue to decline, because the new generation of collectors — if there are any — are more interested in computer gadgets and the toys they played with as kids.

It's kind of depressing — die cast and cast iron toys were super hot collectibles 20 years ago, and now nobody wants them...

That is true too. Not much supply but not too much demand, unfortunately.

I’ve enjoyed the figures. I also have the K & C glossy ones that I like. Another nice little range is the Wild West. Have all of those and intend to keep them.

Completely agree, Brad. Trophy Wild West is a great range — unfortunately, it was never developed and broadened like other Trophy lines. I also like K&C Rough Riders a lot, and I will have more of them.

There were only seven made but even still it took awhile to get them all. I have almost all of the K & C Rough Rider range, both glossy and matte.

Confirmed it sold for $5000 on buy it now. I also did a search and saw that a Hand to Hand no box (Mtd vs standing) sold for $294. I would say the Alamo sets are more rare than others. Again, there were a number of bidders at high dollar values on this lot, so who knows.
Tom
