Hello Martyn,

It is real treat to see these magnificent Trophy elephant sets.

Grateful Thanks, Raymond.

Martyn: Is the Prince of Wales elephant the only one with tusks? It must have been made by a different sculptor or was an effort to accurately depict the photo in your catelogue. Someone thought the other elephants look like Britains which we know is not the case. Same with the civilan ride. Any information or ideas?

Hi Tommy

I believe it is the only one with tusks, as you know the picture of the set adorned the cover of the early Trophy catalogues. I am looking for the Elephant Gatling Gun set and the Zoo Ride set

Cheers

Hello Martyn: I need the gatling gun set. I haven't seen one even on ebay. Good hunting.

Once again Martyn thanks for providing me with the first of my New Year Trophy fixes posted by you.

Damien: Thanks for the photo. Looked like a great set condition wise. Obviously, I need to improve my hunting skills on ebay.

They do look like the Britains elephants, but not from the toy soldier line from their plastic safari (now deleted) line.

Hi Scott

Do you have any pictures of the Britains elephants you could post?

Martyn: Have you ever seen any sets of an Indian Army Elephant Battery made by Trophy for "Under Two Flags"? There is a reference to such a set selling for $550 in 1985 at a Phillips New York branch auction. Reported by Henry I. Kurtz in an article titled "Toy Soldiers on Parade".

Unfortunately no Tommy. The only two Trophy Elephant Battery sets I have seen are from the Indian Mutiny and Raj/Indian Army series.

Wow $550 was a large price for a set in 1985:eek:

I think photos 3 and 4 in your elephants album were made by Trophy. The color, the way the trunk is and the lack of tusks seem to indicate that to me. The only elephant Trophy made with tusks seems to be the Prince of Wales elephant. Also, the face painting on photo 11 is not like those on photos 3 and 4. Great collection and photos. Thanks for posting those. Best regards,

Hi Martyn,

I think that's what a lot of us forget about Trophy (I was only 12 at that time!!!) was that the big sets have always been expensive at retail. I know some sets now fetch way way above their value, but there are a lot of the big sets, elephants included that were quite costly to begin with!

Hi Tom

As you probably know the catalogue had a price code next to the set and this corresponded with a price list at the back of the catalogue. I have had a look through the 1992 catalogue that I have and pulled these examples:

AZW – RHA FIELD GUN AT THE GALLOP = £170 code XG
RAJ – PRINCE OF WALES STATE ELEPHANT = £171 code I
BOER – STEAM ROAD TRANSPORT – TRACTION ENGINE = £330 code Q9
RAJ/INDIAN ARMY – ELEPHANT DRAWN SEIGE GUN = £209 code XH
RAJ/INDIAN ARMY – ELEPHANT GATLING GUN = £128 code Q1

Sets with a code Q10 retailed for £635 and code Q11 retailed for £800, I have looked for any sets with these codes Q10 and Q11 but can’t find any, does anyone have any idea what sets these codes represent?

Just as an aside I have 6 figure sets of 24th with a £39 price ticket;)

Cheers

Martyn:)
