I have a small Trophy of Wales vignette of the Dervishes and Fuzzie Wuzzies attacking a Highland square composed of four different regiments---Gordon Highlanders, Argryll and Sutherland Highlanders, Cameron Highlanders, and the Highland Light Infantry,

Photo one: Argryll & Sutherland Highlanders on left side of square, Camerons hand-to-hand vs. Fuzzie Wuzzies in front, HLI firing line behind them, and Gordon command set in rear.

Photos two & three: Right side of square with Gordons advancing and firing prone behind sand bags

Yes, they are Gordons. They have the red bands on their helmets. There are actually three sets of Gordons in the square: HLS1 - Command set with a mounted officer, Sergeant, drummer, & officer on foot. HSL4 - Six privates lying firing with sandbags, and SS30 - Officer, piper, and four privates advancing with fixed bayonets. Trophy offered the six HLS sets and SS30 & SS31 in four different versions: Camerons, Black Watch & Gordons in scarlet tunics or Seaforths in khaki tunics. I am not sure how I was able to find a set of SS30 Argryll & Sutherland Highlanders, since they were not offered in the catalog.

We will break that square yet.

Will the sand be red with the blood of the square that broke?

Seems like Little Legion's doing a fine job holding the Square seems like a well awaited package arrived from the British Isle. Thanks for sharing them Damian....The Lt.

Such great figures. I wonder if we'll ever have Trophy back through Maison Militaire. It would be a happy day.

Here are some further adventures from the Victorian Empire

Very cool! I love the Mahdists on Horseback. I love this stuff. Hope the carpets do not get to red.

Damian, did you get those Black Watch guys as a special request from Little Legion? I have never seen them before...only the Khaki clad highlanders. They look great...right up my alley.

I just asked Mike Norris to do them with red tunics. I am not sure now whether that was correct as I think the Black Watch wore a faded blue tunic at Tamai. I think there were some battles against the Dervishes when they wore red though.

Damian, I have since talked with Paul Hermann who says that Mr. Norris has always offered them in either red or khaki. I like that he even adds the little red feather hackle on their helmets. I owned a set of Camerons from LL in khaki, but sold them after a while. I wanted them to have a bit more detail than they had. It is always a little awkward asking these very talented and creative guys to do things a bit differently, though I'd love to get a bunch of his Sudan era highlanders with dicing on hose, and tartan helmet flashes, and so on. I'd love to get some of those scarlet clad BW guys, though, to supplement the Frontline crew I posted under that thread recently. I think you are right about some action against the dervishes wearing red tunics, though that time between the Egyptian campaign starting and the reconquest of Sudan in the late 1890's baffles me a bit in terms of who was wearing what. I know a few select units of the Gordon relief column brought them along, though did not necessarily wear them. I believe you are correct, though, in that the BW were wearing grey or bluish at Tamai. I sort of figured I would display my red tunic fellows as in action at Tel El Kebir or so. Anybody have any good insights re: scarlet tunics in action against the dervishes.

Dave
I believe that there were some battles with the dervishes where red coats were worn. I prefer the red to the kakhi. I have heard a lot about Paul Herman and his shop. He is not on the internet so I am not sure of what he has in stock. As far as I know he is the only stockist of Little Legion figures in the US and probably the world. Does he have a big selection. I buy from Mike Norris directly but it takes about 5 months for him to fill an order. I do not really mind as it gives me time to save and as we now have quite a good relationship he keeps me ticking over with stuff. I find that the Little Legion stuff complements the Trophy stuff which is now getting quite difficult to find. I look forward to seeing your new Dervishes. One can never have enough Dervishes and Zulus.

I feel fortunate in that Paul's shop is about 1 hours drive from my house. As you might guess, I am there often. He has a massive cabinet of LL things, and it is a thing of beauty. I could stand in front of it for hours. At any one time, he likely has about 50-75% of what's available including a large selection of Napoleonics (breathtaking) and Zulu War stuff, and smaller quantities of Egypt/Sudan and other things. Paul is not a computer guy and so not on line, but loves to do business over the phone which may be a bit pricey from your location. They order from LL about every 2-3 months, so I usually add some stuff to his orders, like 24th Foot figures with tea-colored helmets or other things not typically in stock. A friend from Chicago and I are hoping to visit your part of the world in the next year or 2...we just have to see Isandlwana, Rorkes Drift and everything in between.

Give me a shout when you decide to come to SA. It would be good to meet up. I visited Milwaukee in 1998. In February so it was pretty cold. A few montsh later the toy soldier compendium was published and I found out about Paul's shop. I kicked myself for missing out on the opportunity to visit it. If I finally get impatient with waiting for mIke maybe I will order something from Paul.
Regards
Damian
