trophy on ebay (1 Viewer)

Hey,
Anyone else see the "Wild West Gunslinger" up on Ebay! Looks like he is ready to shoot up a saloon.

Hey Guys,
Anyone see the Young Winston Churchill set finishing up tonight on Ebay? I think it is being offered by "Groovy Chick" she has some nice stuff. Anyway, have you seen this set offered with this horse before?? Certainly is not as nice as the leaping grey charger pictured in the Trophy catalog. Variation or mix up on the horse? Thanks
JW

Hi John

That looks like the first version, not sure if it had a grey horse or not. Mine is the later DC version with a grey horse

Thanks Martyn,
I am never quite sure the amount of variation within each set! Makes Trophy all the more interesting.

Hi Martyn and JW,

There is a colour photograph of the earlier Trophy set "Young Winston" in Norman Joplin's book entitled "Toy Soldiers" published by Quantum Books (2002).

It shows "Young Winston" on a grey horse with no rifle/scabbard attached to saddle on the right side. Otherwise, the horse and saddle are similar to the DC version.

The Trophy and DC set differ in the facial appearance of "Young Winston" (may be subjective) and the included Dervish warrior.

The set is also pictured in a black and white photograph in the Trophy 1996 catalogue, but from a left lateral view.

Hello Raymond,
Phoenix made a "mounted Churchill with a pistol" metal kit in 54mm long ago (before Trophy) which looks very similar to Trophy figures.:)
Maybe Norman showed that set in his book , it's hard to tell without seeing a picture. See a picture of the kit below.

Hi Al,

Unfortunately, I am at work now (it is Monday morning 1020 hr SGT) so I am not able to post a picture of the Trophy set in Norman Joplin's book. However, I can say with near 100% certainty that he did not picture a painted version of the Phoenix model.

Hi Martyn and JW,

Here are the pictures of "Young Winston" as in Norman Joplin's book.

The full title of the book is: Toy Soldiers: The Collector's Guide to Identifying, Buying and Enjoying Toy Soldiers by Norman Joplin published by Quantum Publishing (2002). The picture is in Chapter 6, Page 51.

This 80 page softcover book is easy to read and features a good spread of pictures in colour. It is listed quite frequently on eBay.

I hope this helps for reference.

I reckon the fellow who sold the figure on eBay merely mounted Mr. Churchill on the wrong horse. It looks like Winston, like most of Trophy's horsemen, is detachable from his horse. If you inherited a bunch of horses and riders, I can see how that could happen.

JW,

You are most welcome. The 2 sets are similar, but with some differences.

I have attached the photograph of Martyn's set here to facilitate comparison.
