I know everyone thinks old Trophy on ebay is a gold mine and sometimes that is the case. BUT I would like to point out that Trophy was never a "bargain basement" brand guys.

Example - WW1 Seige Train of Somme - basically a lorry set. It just sold for $455.
Guess what, original price was $595 US.

I use to buy Trophy from the UK so I would have to pay shipping and currency exchange, trust me, it has never been cheap, but then again, good things are not!!

Take a look if you can find some original retail price lists, it may sticker shock you and you will see some ebay prices are not too bad!

Patience will bring you rewards when looking for Trophy. For instance in Chicago this year, my good friend Clive and I split about 20 Afghans that made about 3 sets, cost $10 per figure. Now that's a deal!

Ebay on anything can go either way, but there is Trophy out there, you just have to be patient.

Furthermore, more and more sets will hit the market, it takes time!

I think you are absolutely right : Trophy has never been a "cheap" brand at the first place. However as I said before, the realized Trophy prices at eBay just reflect bidding 3-4 guys against another, once they are "done", eBay prices are going down considerably.
My strategy always was buying Trophy on secondary market: from existing collections, estates etc. so far I was successful in this department :smile2:
What is really annoying that almost every Trophy set sold at eBay was marked "RARE" by a seller...which is not true for most of listed sets to say at least...but what the heck I would encourage "Trophy high rollers" to pay high prices at eBay as long I can sell there my dups or sets I do not need :tongue:

I do not think that all Trophy boats are rare (at least in my book)...I think the Sudan war vessels are desirable but they are relatively easy to find: I would say retail:
Victoria -$2,500-$3,000, Armed Nile Riverboat $1,000-$1,200, the Arab Dhow $1,000 ++ (and I have never paid these prices

The Lion & the Leopard are more scarce but they are less desirable for the collectors, I have not seen them much so I would not speculate on the price.

Besides these boats take a lot of room, so they are not for everybody...

I also think that the number of SERIOUS Trophy collectors is on the par with the number of the Trophy boats made...:tongue:

I found your remarks of interest. I did my main Trophy collecting between 1993 & 1998. And yes, the prices kept going up fast during that time frame! However, when I sold a bunch of Trophy Sudan War sets in mid 2005 on eBay I only got about 50% of oringinal costs! However, right after Trophy officially went out of business the end of 2006 I got very much higher prices with net profits starting in early 2007 on eBay sales of Trophy sets. I wish I would have waited another one to two years to sell all the Trophy sets I sold in 2005 & 2006. Ah, timing is everything! I still have very many Trophy Zulu War sets as well a few others. Len Taylor was a splendid fellow to met in person @ his Wales HQ back in July 2005 during our trip to the UK back then.
