True Grit (1 Viewer)

This is on my "must see" list for sure. I am a great fan of the original (ok, mainly just Wayne and Duvall), but I really like the cast and want to see the darker side of Cogburn that Bridges is suppossed to present. I love westerns.:D -- Al

It looks like a good remake of a classic, the Coen Brothers have made some remarkable movies, I'm a big fan of Millers Crossing.

Just watched Miller's Crossing again and have to say it is one of my favorites, too. Freeman as "the Dane" was just outstanding and Polito as Casper ("It's the high hat.") stole the show IMO. Just a great movie. -- Al

Thought Bridges did a superb job in his interpretation of Hickock and I thought the movie was pretty good as well, though a bit untraditional. -- Al

Yea...Wild Bill...it was a different version of my understanding the historical accuracey...but I loved it...

Jeff Bridges has always been one of my favorites..."The Big Lebowski"...when they (John Goodman) throw Steve Buscemi's ashes off the cliff and they blow back in his face...that scene is hysterical...

Wild Bill's cast made it a sure thing...

Ellen Barkin...
John Hart...he was great...
Diane Lane...
Bruce Dern...
Christine Applegate...
David Arquette...maybe his best role ever...he has not had many...
Keith Carradine...

coincidently...

Keith Carradine in the movie wild Bill...also played Wild Bill Hickok in a series called Deadwood...

the best western series EVER...in my opinion...that was canceled after a couple of seasons on HBO...

Look forward to seeing how this turns out, quite some ask following in the footsteps of the Duke in one of his most famous roles, should be good.

Rob

I only saw the previews and I am not too impressed, am I alone in this thought? I just don't think you can replace the Duke or even redo a role that he owned. I am probably going to have a hard time liking this one.

I dunno...I have always been a big fan of Jeff Bridges...he has a great cast accompanying him too...Josh Brolin and Matt Damon...I gotta feeling this is gonna be a winner...

John Wayne...big shoes to fill...Billy Bob was good...but John Wayne's Alamo will never be replaced...

This is on my list to see but I have been made a little less enthusiastic by the ads. Bridges seems kind of wooden in the brief glimpses these ads provide. I will still see it if the reviews aren't all terrible but I will be very interested to see if Bridges is a worthy fill in for the Duke. I don't know if it can be done. -- Al

I hope I can enjoy it for what it is,a movie and not compare it to Wayne's.If you do that you won't enjoy it.JW is an American icon.

This version is suppose to follow the original novel closer than the John Wayne film, which is one of my favorite movies. I think it will be hard to beat it. I just got it on Blue Ray. I'll be watching that instead :)

I love Jeff Bridges but am not a member of the John Wayne fan club. I will watch this new movie because of Bridges. He is a versatile actor Something that. Cannot be said for John Wayne

You and I agree on a lot of things Michael, but you lost me on this one.

The Ron Howard version of The Alamo is so much better than the John Wayne version; the early morning final assault which caught the defenders by surprise, the accuracy of the compound, the uniforms, the weapons, the desperate hand to hand fighting, on and on it goes.

Thought he did a much better job with Crockett than Wayne did.

Off topic, but I loved Johne Wayne in The horse soldiers, it's been on cable a lot recently, one of my all time favorites.

That said, not sure why they'd want to remake True Grit, why mess with a classic, remakes seem to be the rage these days, one movie after another is being remade, guess there are few original thinkers left in Hollyweird.......................

Oooooh come on man...

John Wayne, Richard Widmark, Richard Boone, Laurence Harvey...not to mention the sound track...that was the Lawrence of Arabia of San Antonio...it was a masterpiece...that is what actually started me collecting soldiers...my first set...the plastic "Alamo" set...no remake will ever best that movie in my opinion...

and being from Texas...most of us down here don't like the version (correct or not) of Davy Crockett surrendering...

you would not believe how proud most Texans are of the Battle of the Alamo...

"Dang boy"...we sit around the ranch, in our boots and cowboy hats and reminisce about it...

but the Billy Bob version was very good too...one of my favorites...

I just kept waiting for him to say...

"Errrrrrrr...I like that boy...errrrrrrr...I want some French fried taters...errrrrrr...reckon you could make me some biscuits...:D

I saw the Wayne version of "The Alamo" in the theaters as a kid and was captivated by it. Never thought it could be topped but I think the last version by Howard did just that. I am a HUGE Wayne fan and still love his version with all it's action and big movie stars (Linda Cristal is gorgeous), but I now find the writing and some of the acting rather wooden. I think Widmark went overboard with Bowie and have never really cared for the job he did. Add in all we now know is historically inaccurate and the Wayne version suffers compared to the Howard version. I think Billy Bob was excellent as Crockett and Jason Patrick's Bowie buries Widmark's version. Didn't care for Quaid's Sam Houston but I thought the Juan Sequin character, played by Jordi Molla was outstanding. I know there are inaccuracies in the Howard version but I thought they were far outweighed by the depiction of the town, outbuildings, the Alamo itself, and especially the final action taking place at night, for historical accuracy. All in all, I will watch either version for what I enjoy in them but the reasons are just different. -- Al

Al...George...both versions are very good shows...the JW version is definitely more Hollywood...no argument there...

that movie was released in 1960...I was 5 years old...my father sat through two features with me on a Saturday morning...167 minutes...him spending his time with me...indulging his son like a good father...that may weigh on my decision as to which I like best...

if I remove the "Dad" factor...I dunno...it's a coin toss...

Dad made it a great memory as a child...but he was a JW fan too...
