I've just seen the announcement on the Guideline publications website that they've acquired Toy Soldier and Model Figure magazine from Ashdown...

What what it'll mean with both magazines under the same publisher?

Mike

Guess an aligment on the way they tackle the articles for sure, so as to save costs and at least one editor chief will become redundant.....

Interesting. I think my subscription to TS&MF has lapsed. Didn't they switch to digital issues when the lockdowns started?
I notice now that if I go to https://toy-soldier.com/, the TS&MF page loads for a second or two, then it redirects to the Toy Soldier Collector page.

Prost!

Seems that the wheel has turned .....

I used to subscribe to TSMF from issue 16 to about 130, and I also subscribed to TSC since its inception in 2005.

I decided to stop TSMF when it went to the USA as I found there was so much advertising from there and model figures and GI Joe figures, and I only wanted toy soldiers.
Another eson was the cost of a monthly magazine versus a bi-monthy meant i have more cash to buy toy soldiers. The increasing information on the internet also meant that I could get the latest news quicker, so only one magazine now.

Over that 20 year time frame I have been in contact with Mark Avery as he went from TSMF to TSC, so I sure hope he stays in the helm to continue his fine work.

My only worry is that TSC may go monthly , so them I would have to make a decision on weather to continue???

I understand from the castings reviewer Gary Haines, who has stepped down, that there was to be a new editor of TSC anyway, not sure who though... I guess it will be announced in the new issue.

I think TS&MF suffered from going digital - I pulled my advertising after the second digital only issue as I was paying for an advert in a physical and digital magazine but only getting the digital side...

This is an interesting turn as I have a current subscription and as posted before, not the happiest, so we shall see. Additionally, they have my FULL email address and I never even got notice that 250 was going digital. Basically TSMF took my renewal money and ran. I don't want to see any posts praising this or that. This has nothing to do with Stuart. Based on my experience, they sold me a bill of goods ie a 2 year print subscription and they took my money, yet didn't deliver the product. What do you call it?

Tom

Was issue #250 ever produced? digital or not?
I know that #248 was digital only, then they printed #249...I did not see #250...

I subscribed to TSC from its release till about 3 years ago. My subscription expired, I contacted Larry Weindorf/For the Collector to renew, and he never replied. I decided at that point that I really didn't need the magazine. I've been thinking the same thing about TS&MF. There's not a lot of content for me in it, and I may just let the subscription lapse, if it hasn't already.

Prost!

I used to buy the digital single copies of both from Amazon and Magzter, because they were much less than the hard copies. TSC at Barnes & Noble was $14 an issue, ridiculous (to me) to pay around $9 more just for hard copy. I once went to the TSMF web site to look at a subscription, but when I clicked the Subscribe link it took me to an English betting site. So much for that. (I told them that their site was hijacked.)
I also lost interest in both over time - haven't read one in at least a year. You can get pretty much the same info from boards like this anymore.

I have just seen the TSC website and it states that

Toy Soldier Collector & Historical Figures

will be the name of the new magazine.

The next edition #98 (Feb/Mar 2021) will also be the last for long time editor Mark Avery who is retiring.

Check out all the details here: http://www.toysoldiercollector.com/

They have now announced the new format of the magazine which will be one 100 page magazine incorporating both titles. It will be edited by Stuart Hennessy - the editor of TS&MF.

I think that is really good news and I'm looking forward to the new magazine.

I'm pretty frustrated by this decision. I recently resubscribed to Toy Soldier & Model Figure magazine for a two-year digital subscription. Hopefully, they will honour the subscription and transfer it to the new magazine; otherwise, that is money wasted.

I am sure they will honour the subscription - they have taken over a number of magazines and always taken on the subscriptions when they did so - such as Model Farmer... Guideline seem a decent company.

So happy that Stuart is staying on board! Always great to catch up with him at shows!

Update, had a nice email conversation with Toy Soldier Collector, first class organization. They are combining the subscriptions so no worries there, you will get total number of issues. I didn't get an answer on TSMF issue 250 digital. SO, no idea whether that can still be viewed or not, but I have received nothing in that regard. At the end, TSMF was a complete debacle and I guess now we know why. I do think the new ownership is a plus and hopefully one nice magazine going forward will be a winner.

Also glad Stuart is on board as I am positive we will get a good magazine content wise. I never had an objection to that, but the business end of TSMF was IMO the worst and good riddance and don't let the proverbial door hit them in the posterior on the way out.

Not sure if it's good news or bad news that both magazines will now be combined into one publication; aside from this joint venture, there is one other toy soldier related magazine in publication, Playset Magazine, which bought out Plastic Figure and Playset Magazine a number of years ago.

At one time, there were by my count half a dozen toy soldier related magazines in publication, we're now down to two.

I think magazines in general cater to an older crowd, perhaps 55 plus? Many magazines are now going digital vs an actual hardcopy of the publication.

I wish the new joint venture luck, will see once they contact me what the ad rates will be........................................this new joint venture really needs to look into getting placed into one of the large book store chains, that would help with circulation and perhaps grow the hobby.

But that depends on whether there are even any book store chains left, I really have no idea as in truth, I buy all my books from either Amazon, Ebay or publishers such as Casemate and Le Livre Chez Vous.........................

...aside from this joint venture, there is one other toy soldier related magazine in publication..

I think we have to qualify the statement as one other monthly publication. Ray Haradin still publishes "Old Toy Soldier", but it's a quarterly.

When I first started collecting toy soldiers, I subscribed to both OTS, and Bill Lango's "Toy Soldier Review". I remember when he decided to stop publishing, that was sad. Both he and Ray-well, Steve Sommer first, if I remember correctly-really covered the classic toy soldier content, with a good number of people writing about American dimestore toy soldiers, too.

Prost!
Brad

Plastic Warrior covering plastic soldiers is still published as well.

It is something we are seeing in other hobbies as magazine content moves online and things you would have read about in a magazine are now on blogs or youtube...

I still think you can't beat a glossily printed magazine...

Can someone confirm whether or not there was a TSMF issue 250? Issue 249 was hardcopy and digital, issue 248 was only digital correct?

I was charged for an advert in issue 250 and as far as I know it appeared as a digital only issue. I cancelled my advertising at that point as I hadn't been told it wsa digital only and I was paying for a physical and digital advret and not receiving what I had been charged for.

To be fair, the advrtising person in the Uk had not been told it was to be digital only...
