The Museum of Science & Industry has the captured German sub U-505. I recommend viewing the sub if you visit Chicago.

I remember as a kid growing up on the South side when they moved the Sub from Lake Michigan across Lake Shore Drive to the museum. I watched them move it for a half a day about a inch an hour. I think it took a week to get the sub in place.

Now the sub has a nice indoor facility to house it after being outside for 50 years.

torpedo's away! There are waiting lists to go through the sub. On school field trips you might as forget it. Some days you cannot get tickets due to schools.

I have to agree if you visiting Chicago, it is worth a trip to see the U-505.

The walk through the U-boat is great as is the whole exhibit. On one of my trips to see the U-505, a German submariner was there giving tours.

Excellent photos - thanks for posting! It's hard to get good indoor photos in many buildings but yours are quite nice. I missed the U-boat on my last Chicago trip. Maybe I can drag the wife along through it this coming Sept.

John, excellent photos.:) I've gotta get back and see that again one day. An interesting note is that my Great-Great Uncle was a member of the task force that captured U-505.

Vick

Thanks for posting Leadmen; they're very nice pics. One note if you do plan on visiting the U-505. You have to be sure to get there early enough to get the special ticket that allows you to see the interior of the submarine. If not, you'll only get to see the outside. I think you can also get them on the museum's website.
