Has anyone else in the UK noticed there are a few sellers, France and Portugal, auctioning K & C on ebay are putting 'with 20% tax' to be added on to the winning bid!

yes ive just bought some figures to paint from the Ukraine and they added 20% ive also noted it on figures from the USA. As long as I dont get customs charges on top it's not so bad.

As of 1st January, anyone selling to the UK must charge UK VAT to their customer and then remit that to HMRC. Hence the 20% charge.

This is an EU wide rules that the EU have delayed until July 1st for implementation.

Looks like the 20% VAT is being added when buying from China also, at least from y-weido if in the UK

Hey Steve, I'm finding this VAT tax thingy a bit confusing and have a question?

If I was to buy a product in the UK online and get it shipped to NZ, would I then also be charged this extra 20% VAT?

Cheers Toddy

This topic has also been discussed on the Planet Figure site. A key point by my reading is the discussion around whether or not goods of a value less than £135 are currently exempt from Value Added Tax, or not. Buy figures from Europe for U.K. residents. Tax? | planetFigure | Miniatures This is the link if interested.

The only mainland continental order I have made recently was paid for before the 1st of Jan. 2021. and no VAT was charged. Delivery was mid Jan. as a figure was out of stock, which I knew. It got to me in 6 days from time of posting in Germany to me in Scotland, which was more than fine with me.

If VAT is going to be charged on all purchases, will suppliers from E.U. countries take off local taxes, such as Mehrwersteuer (MwSt.) in Germany. I notice Metal Modeles, France are showing 2 prices, with and without taxes.

Dealers should not be adding VAT on book orders, as they are zero rated in the U.K. i.e. no tax added.

Death and taxes, claimed to be the only 2 certainties.

Hi Toddy, I maybe totally off on this but I would of thought that NZ Customs and Excise would be the ones collecting any dues on goods coming into NZ rather than HMRC.
Also assuming seller is set up for outside UK sales and not charging them VAT. If they are I would think there is some form you can fill in hopefully on internet, same as they have in the international airports for claiming VAT back by non UK nationals. How that works and if there is a minimum amount I couldn't say.

You are correct in your assumption.

The new VAT rules don't affect sales to countries outside the EU.

If a supplier is VAT registered they can remove the VAT before shipping it to you, and then you pay any local taxes when the package arrives as before Jan 1st.

Thanks everyone for their feedback, that's much appreciated. I now have a way better idea of how VAT is applied and to whom. The hobbies expensive enough as it is let alone adding an extra 20% into the mix. I feel for you guys up north.

We've had similar issues with our GST (Goods & Services Tax) over the years which is currently at 15%.

If I keep my overseas purchases below a certain amount I tend not to be charged any import tax, however have previously been stung and it hurt the pocket big time.
