The very talented UKREB, Bob Jones, and his lovely wife Trudy visited New York this last weekend, and Rich Schuster (NYToysoliders), his wife lovely Madeline, my lovely wife Meredith and myself got to entertain them Monday. I picked Bob and Trudy up at their hotel in Manhattan, and drove them out to visit historical whaling town Cold Spring Harbor, New York. As I explained to them, while in England this constitutes new construction, here in the colonies homes and shops built in the 18th and 19th centuries are historic. They visited the whaling museum, saw the 1924 American LaFrance Fire Engine outside the firehouse museum, visited antique shops and had coffee and treats at the local bakery. We then got lost trying to find Rich's house, because the street sign was missing, but we finally arrived. Rich and Madeline put out a nice spread of traditional New York style Kosher Deli, and after lunch we toured Rich's spectacular collection. Then I took Bob and Trudy to Sands Point Preserve to see the former Guggenheim Family Gold Coast Mansions, now a museum open to the public, which are believed to have provided the inspiration for "The Great Gatsby." Then back to my home for drinks and a tour of my collection. I presented Bob with some special Civil War figures, a one of a kind by Ken Osen I had won at a charity auction a couple of Chicago Shows ago, and a glossy K&C Tiger Zoave. Bob was kind enough to present me with two authentic World War I medals, a plaque from the Ward Room of WWII Destroyer HMS Cossack (the last vessel involved in a boarding where cutlasses were used) and copies of the two recent magazines where his dioramas made the cover. We then met Rich and Madeline for dinner at Kyma, a wonderful Greek Seafood Restaurant nearby. After a very pleasant meal, I dropped my wife home, and drove Bob and Trudy back to their hotel in NYC. They left the next day on the QEII for an elegant cruise back to Great Britain.

To Bob, Trudy and any of my other friends here on the forum, please come visit New York whenever you can. The local toy soldier community, including Brad (Jazzeum), Mark Hoffman, Rich and myself, love to get the chance to entertain you! Oh, and I am already trying to talk my wife into a trip to Great Britain once my back is up to a long plane ride (I am shooting for next summer), because the British toy soldier community (Bob and Trudy, Clive and his lovely wife Sue, Rob, Simon, Kevin Elliott, the Nevilles, and so many others), has always been so hospitable to me when I visited in the past.:smile2:

Louis...

you sound like a great host...
pulling out all the stops...
I'm sure Bob and his wife appreciated your effort...

Sounds like a great time had by all!!! and the wonderful gifts that were exchanged by both Louis and Bob just shows thier character, I have never met Bob but we have exchanged emails over the last so many years whether it be on toy soldiers/dioramas/ or holiday wishes Bob is a true gent in every sense of the word.

One Day Louis I hope to bring the good wife and myself to the big city and would love to take up your offer as well as see your collection and visit the local haunts, one day very soon perhaps!...Sammy

Great story! I have always found this hobby to be on the most hospitable ones around and Louis is one of the most gracious hosts/ambassadors you will ever meet.

Couldn`t agree more! I had the privilege to meet Louis in New York any through him both Rich and Mark and I can`t praise them enough for the great hosts and ambassadors they are! Good to know Louis that soon you`ll be able to take the longer airplane trips to the UK! Why not try to plan a visit to Brazil for the summer Olympics next year? (or anytime sooner - carnaval is in February). I will be beyond very happy to have you and any other forum member here!

Hi Louis
Finally back from a great vacation in NYC and Atlantic crossing albeit the weather here this side of the pond is nowhere near the 90 plus degrees we had in New York plus of course it's raining...as usual.

I just wanted to thank you sincerely for your genuine hospitality and to let you know what a great day Trudi and myself had with you, Meredith, Rich and Maddie on Long Island.- so much so we both haven't stopped talking about it. Louis, you are a fantastic host and guide as your tour of Cold Spring Harbor should be placed in a guide book- it really was that good. Trudi simply loved the "Sweetie Pie" tea room and of course that antique shop albeit I am still getting grief from her for not showing any interest in that Gothic American doll she wanted to purchase

And as for yours and Rich's TS collections well.... WOW! I am positive that my fellow members of the London Brit Brigade would give their eye teeth just to view them. For me it was almost akin to travelling through history in miniature form. Also the dinner at Kyma was absolutely outstanding and we now completely understand why it's yours and Meredith's favourite restaurant. It got our vote too.

Louis we both sincerely appreciate the time you took to entertain us and I am reminded of a quote from the Greek Poet Homer "a guest never forgets the host who had treated him kindly" If you can make it to London next summer be assured that your kindness and hospitality will be fully reciprocated by Trudi and myself-Count on it.
Your friend and fellow collector
Bob
However, I am still confused why your baseball has a World Series when it's only played within the States and your explanation didn't convince me either ^&grin^&grin^&grin

Bob,

I had such a good time playing host to you and Trudi, I can't wait to visit with you both again, either here or in London! If you get here again, I will try to arrange a trip to Gettysburg for us and our wives. They can hit the wonderful nearby antique mall and the spas, while we tour the battlefield and the toy soldier shops. Oh, and tell Trudi next time I visit Cold Spring Harbor the porcelain doll is coming home with me (you have to send me your address so I can send it to her:wink2:).

Rob,

Believe me, as soon as my back as up to it, and I can talk the wife into it, I will be visiting London again!:salute::

A trip to the Imperial War Museum with you sounds fantastic!{sm4}

Brad,

Asking the forum's worst photographer for pictures is unlikely to get you anywhere. However, I know Trudi took photos, maybe Bob could post a few!

I hope so, it would be fun to share a look at Bob's visit.

Prost!

Recently installed Windows 10 and although a vast improvement on Windows 8 the format is entirely different and is proving the devil of a job to navigate around the menu especially uploading pictures from one's digital camera. Hopefully here are a few shots of our recent NYC & Atlantic crossing vacation.

Ground Zero one of the most moving memorials we have ever visited anywhere in the world. Although full of visitors their silent respect was spellbinding and very poignant. Aside from the water cascading into the square aperture you really could have heard a pin a drop.

Onto the Empire State Building

"Top of the World Ma!"

Met an old friend in the ESB Gift Centre. We had first made our acquaintances in the dark of my college film club more years ago than I care to remember.

Walking down 5th Avenue we saw this overturned car which turned out to be a movie being filmed

As some of you know-being a complete movie nerd I watched and waited until the scene was shot and then began chatting to the film crew. A great bunch of guys and the director, who was only to happy to talk to a Brit, told me that on average about 250 movies/TV episodes were shot on the streets of NYC every year
That's 200 more than are shot in London.

My facial expression in this shot is of my beloved behind the camera saying "Come on Jones you promised me a visit to Tiffany's" Ouch!

Consequently, She who must be obeyed-Tiffany's it was. Guys the content of that little bag she is holding cost me the equivalent of six months TS allowance-Ouch! again.

As previously stated within this thread we had a terrific day with Louis and Richard and unfortunately I never took any shots of either of their spectacular TS collections but here's a shot of us three Froggers on a jetty at Sands Point Reserve. If I remember correctly our discussion at the time was whether Rich was going to invest in either a boat or a jet-ski. With the temperature that day hitting 90 degrees I myself was contemplating just diving into that water.

Thanks again Louis/Rich you guys and your charming ladies made it a really special day for Trudi and myself. I'll sort out and post a few more pictures later of the QM2 voyage back to Southampton.
Bob

Finally figured out who Bob reminds me of...Moon light Graham!!! or "Doc" in Field of Dreams:)...Sammy

Smashing pics Bob. You both look really well and glad you had a great time.
Best
