Does anyone know if Esci had any figure sets on the drawing board before their demise?

Both, although if memory serves me right they would create the sets in 1/72 first.

Here is the new release page from the 1993 Esci catalog. Unfortunately, they never were released by Esci. I got this from PSR website.

Some of these sets (medieval and American Civil War) would eventually be released by Accurate, but the Romans and Carthaginians, the battlefield accessories 2 and the modern Muslims and Rapier Missiles never were produced although other companies would later cover some of those subjects.

Interesting - way ahead of the times with the Muslim troops. Don't think any Middle Eastern figures were produced until about five years ago. Not really surprising given that Esci was the first to cover Vietnam.

Even today we don't have a regular Middle Eastern army in either 1/72 or 1/32. There are Mujahideen and Taliban from Mars and AIP in 1/32 and the Ultima Ratio and Mars Mujahideen and the urban resistors and militia sets from Caesar in 1/72, but as far as I know, we never got the Iraqi army, which the Esci set seems to represent, in any scale.

Interestingly, the picture of the Iraqi officer in the Esci catalog seems to have been copied from a Marx 60mm American GI.

I remember seeing this page in the 1993 catalog at my favorite hobby shop and waiting eagerly for the sets, especially the Muslims. I had plans to have a big Gulf War scenario going. I gave up hope about the middle of 1994.

Man, that must have been a buzzkill planning up your layout and seeing just what you need get canceled! It is strange that no one else produced the figures at the time, what with the Gulf War still pretty fresh in everyone's minds (and a "popular" war at that).

Did you ever attempt to convert figures for your diorama?

Maybe ahead of the times, compared to toy soldier makers. But ESCI marketed its figures to the same people who bought and by Airfix, for example, and 1993 is contemporary to Desert Storm. On the scale modeling side of the hobby, there were figure makers who brought out timely subjects, like Iraqi army figures and Iraqi Arab civilians. Verlinden, for example, had some in his catalog. So I'm not surprised if ESCI planned to issue a set, before they closed up shop.

Prost!

It was a bummer for sure. But it wasn't actually for a diorama, just an informal series of solo tabletop games (translation: playing with my army men). I wound up using the Esci Warsaw Pact figures that didn't look like they were in winter gear for the Iraqis.
