Hey guys was wondering if someone could possibly post a few pics of the old D-Day 2nd Battalion Ranger sets and the British landing craft to see how well they look together? Does the British one look good beside the American one? And do the newer American Ramgers look good in the American one?

Have 'On the Beach Set B' and am trying to get the other three original ranger sets and make an Omha Beach diorama!^&grin

Thanks, Scott^&grin

DD138(L).jpg Judging from this pick the U.S. landing craft looks great. You can't go wrong with the D-Day series! I'm expecting mine to arrive any day now and I'm sure it will look even better in person whether its filled with Yanks or Brits.

Seeing these pics I am tempted to buy one myself and do a real landing scene, landing craft ,flap down and troops wading through the water and storming the beach
guy:)

I've been wanting to do a D-Dy beach diorama since I first started collecting 11 years ago, but first I lacked space, then I discovered Arnhem, then XXX Corps got in the way but now I am thinking of downsizing my collection slightly getting rid of what I don't use!^&grin

I have the image of the one I want to make as:

4 sets of US 2nd Battalion Rangers (if I manage to get the other 3:wink2:) with sets on the beach A and B and calling for re-inforcements and beach under fire all mixed together on the beach/in the water/just leaving the landing craft and spread over the beach front (As all first wave) which I am hoping to make 24" bye 24"ish and then room for water before the sand, so lots of space on the beach for shell craters which will be made by hand, anti-tank obstacles and mabe even a dd tank if king and country produce one! ;)

I have a British LCA which I will put just off the beach as if it has just let its troops out!^&cool

Am going to use play sand from the early learning centre for the beach as I think this will help make the diorama look more authentic and I plan to make footsteps in the sand as well as tank tracks as I may add DD45 - Sherman 105mm! ^&grin

For opposition I may purchase the king and country bunker and burry it in the sand slightly as I will have the sand rising slightly to be able to have like a hill rise in the beach and I already have the bunker defenders! Maybe a beach road cordoned off with the 'halt' barbed wire barricade and maybe some sand fox holes in the German's side for soldiers to hide in and fire onto the beach which would have barbed wire in front of it wrapped in a coil entnglement stretching from one side of the diorama to the beach road and then from the other side of the road to the other side of the diorama infront of the bunker!:wink2:

Then later on, I may add another landing craft, this time American with the newer ranger releases inside it, and like in 'Saving Private Ryan', although historically innacurate, I will have the eight Rangers lined up in the landing craft in two colums along each side of the landing craft and this landing craft will be placed further out in the water towards the other side of the diorama (SEA side)!^&grin

Have been playing with the idea of getting a second British LCA and again like the first LCA leaving it just off the beach like it has just let men off of it! Looking at the diorama as a whole, this would give the idea that each landing craft would have had 8 men each in it, therefore LCA#1 being the first wave with 'Calling for Re-inforcements' and 'Beach Under Fire', LCA#2 being the second wave with 'On The Beach Set A' and 'On The Beach Set B', and the American LCVP being WAVE 3 with the newer US Rangers who could possibly be 5th Rangers as all their helmets are netted!^&grin

Any thoughts on this guys? Ideas for other parts I could add etc?^&grin

Sounds like you have everything well planned out. Just a matter of acquiring the missing sets. !

Scott, what a project !!!!! very ambitiuos, love the sound of it .
But it sounds like a 5 year plan .
looking forward to its realization .
guy:)
PS : don't forget the wounded and the dead on the beach and some beach obstacles, mines on a pole, belgian gates, etc ...

Scott..

Sounds a great project and look forward to seeing it come together.

Harrie...

The sand I used is from Omaha Beach.

Great pictures mate!^&grin

I have the original Rangers set with the 4 dead Rangers but as these don't have invasion kit I don't want to add these to the diorama, plus they are in my cabinet haha!^&grin

Maybe it's would be something to start a new wants thread about: Dead and wounded Rangers? I know this is something that people thing others would not like or would be offended, but that is hardly ever the case as these are just toy soldiers and the dead and wounded are used to represent the men fought and died!:smile2:

King and Country US Ranger Sets - Older and Newer!

Ey up lads!^&grin

Was thinking from the photographs which people were posting on my thread about making a beach diorama and a few from people's old threads of their D-Day dioramas and I noticed how people have blended original older sets of Rangers: DD28 with the newer released ranger sets and also drops of 1st Infantry Division men so as to be able to have wounded in their dios!^&grin

I originally had both 'On the Beach' set A and B, but I had them for a few years and had never done anything with them as I was trying to save up to get the other beach sets: 'Beach Under Fire' and 'Calling For Re-inforcements' to make a D-Day diorama, but they all fell of a table and got damaged when my gran's cat knocked the table down about 4 years ago, so I sold these sets and that was the end of my d-day diorama dreams!:redface2:

But.....I managed to get on the Beach set B again, this time in Mint condition and it has managed to stay this way!^&grin

Trying to get the other three sets but I realised something!{eek3} There is only one wounded Ranger out of 16 men!{eek3} I just finished reading 'The Battalion', probably the best book I have ever read and my favourite book, and it describes the landings at Pointe Du Hoc and Omaha Beach in such detail it is as if one is there witnessing it ! The book describes how many men at the landings had to jump over the sides of their craft and also describes how many wounded and dead were on the beach and in the water and ever talks about most of the men individually, to be honest I feel as though HBO should do a series about the 2nd Battalion Rangers as these men were the best of the best and DOG, EASY, and FOX companies had one of the toughest jobs on D-Day - Climbing a 100 foot cliff and attacking the guns which were supposed to be at the top!

Something different for King and Country to make would be half body Ranger figures! Imagine half body figures from the waist or thighs up in invasion gear with rifles being held above the head or moving forward/firing onto the beach!^&grin This hasn't been done before and I think King and Country could take the pportunity to be the first! Maybe three different sets; 1 of three, and two of two, including one being wounded in the water, and one medic wading ashore!^&grin

Also wounded and dead Ragers for the beach is a must have as the 2nd Battalion Rangers suffered terrible losses on D-Day as did many other divisions/units, for example Able compoany's 1st Platoon having only 14 men making it to the shingle of the beach!

I believe a diorama is only as realistic as the figures it has in it and with only one wounded figure in 16 figures maybe that is a fair ratio but I believe more wounded/dead Rangers look more realistic on the beach!

Anyone else collect these sets and been wanting some more 2nd Rangers, or a follow on from the newly released Rangers?^&grin

Re: King and Country US Ranger Sets - Older and Newer!

First thanks for the lead on the book, "The Battalion". I have a good collection of D-Day reads, but you can never have too many. Interesting how they all describe (or talk) about the save “EVENT” but so many different stories, thoughts, flashback, emotions and more. Each book the same, but oh so different.

Although, I do not collect D-Day sets I can feel your frustration. My K&C AWI has 160 sets (about 170 figures) and only ONE figure being a casualty (BR50). For the AWI range Conte, First Legion, ATKM have nice figures showing wounded or downed soldiers. K&C have made some in other ranges (New AK figure for example)

Your idea of half figures will work in many ranges. I can see some Indians Crossing a stream or river with guns, bows or supplies held up; or how about Continental troops fleeing the British, helping a wounded NY 1st regiment across.

GREAT IDEA^&grin

Andy, please take notice!!!! - Larry

Re: King and Country US Ranger Sets - Older and Newer!

Scott you could use DD061 and DD 095 and turn them into Rangers.( if these references re not the ones you are talking about )
guy:smile2:

I think it would look great, does anyone know what type the canadians used for juno beach? I guess it was a mix & could have been any type available.

I don't believe in changing figures mate haha it's against my collection policies!^&grinHahahaha:p

And thanks Larry!Honestly mate The Battalion is an amazing book! Hard to find a copy but I managed to get the last one on Amazon for a fiver haha, book means something to me as it's the group I re-enact and many of our members have met many of the Rangers who survived the war, although sadly that number is diminishing! I never got to which is one of my regrets, I never got much of a chance right enough but if I had I would have taken it straight away:redface2: I have met many other veterans of different armies and all their experiences are worth talking about!:smile2:

I think they used 'Assault Jerkins' but I canot confirm, I will ask on one of the re-enactment forums I am a member off and get the right answer! ;)

Have been informed that specialist assault troops, e.g. commandos were issued the assault jerkin, and some troops were issued with oilskin waders, not sure what these are, and have been told that they were also issued with lifebelts but not sure what kind!^&grin

What happened to your pics?^&confuse^&confuse^&confuse^&confuse

And could you tell me the ranks of the two sets: 'Calling for Re-inforcements' and 'Beach Under Fire'? I saw that the carbine firer in Beach Under Fire is a Captain, but what is the medic, or does his brassard cover it? And what about the wounded figure and kneeling figure with rifle? And also what about the 'Calling for Re-inforcements'? What rank iseach figure in that?^&grin
