Well I may be going to Federal Prison. I just got a letter from USPS that I violated Federal law. I used one of their small flat rate boxes and covered it with brown paper so I could ship 1st class instead of what the box was for flat rate priority. It said the buyer will have postage due. I confess that I knew you were not suppose to do this but I guess some over zealous mail clerk thought he would show his authority and flex his muscles. With all the BS the post office does this is one more reason for me to disdain them.
They get you coming & going.

Gary...

how did they know it was a flat rate priority box under your brown wrapping?

Mike I called my local post office, by the way they are always very nice & helpfull and talked to the manager and ask her the same question. Her response was "We can just tell" I said I thought everything was automated and she again said "we can just spot them, they are there own size," whatever that is suppose to mean. I sent two boxes out that day both the same. Priority wrapped in brown paper. I only heard back on the one. Now I have done this before, not a lot, but on a few occasions and never had a problem. My next concern is how the buyer will take this. Hopefully he will be understanding as all I was trying to do is keep cost down for everyone. But on the other hand he can be a real ----- about it and cause me grief.
Ebay & USPS never cease to amaze me with the different headaches they can cause.

I would plead ignorance...
and mention that at least you were a customer on this parcel...
and would like to be one in the future...

so...USPS actually did make something off of you on the postage purchased...

I would contact your buyer and inform him you made an error...
and will pay any postage due...

the boxes are a freebie...intended for us to use...
not specifically in the manner you used it...
but none the less...free and for us to use under their guidelines...

I can't understand what they are going to charge in postage due...
the dimensions and weight were correct...
you paid for the postage...
they received compensation for the postage...

I don't understand...

do you owe them for a box?

Mike the USPS manager said I would have to pay the difference between 1st class & flat rate priority. It comes to about $4. I thought of this after I spoke with the manager. Why did the clerk at the post office accept the package if this is so obvious and completely against federal law? I did message the buyer, explained it and he replied "no problem" I did see he had 2100 feedbacks so I figured he has dealt with his own problems in regards to the post office.

I'm still suspicious of how they knew it was a USPS box...
but sounds like a done deal...
prison avoided...
good for you...

maybe we could do a Law and Order episode out of it...^&grin

Or a Seinfeld episode...................

I’m sorry but I’m not overly sympathetic as you intentionally violated a reg or a law. Moreover, how expensive is a box. You can buy them in bulk from Staples and they’re not that expensive. Buying boxes is just a cost of doing business, one which you can factor in your sale price.

Thank you for your moral and business advice. I have never felt so guilty. First unauthorized use of a box, what next, an over due library book? My life is in a downward spiral. Please someone reach out to this lost soul, I need all the help i can get. Wait I hear a knock on the door, my God it is the FBI!!!!! Gotta go.

I'm lucky that I can get my boxes at work but I had a problem once when I was sending books out book rate and the woman started giving me crap that there better not be nothing but books in there.I told her to open it up but if nothing else was in there she could repack the books also pay the rate.she got a little huffy but said no more. They have some nice girls at our post office but over the years I've seen some weird ones at the post offices around here.

I got my eye on you...

Newman was a piece of work, loved the episode where Gerry does his route for him and the post office got wise to Newman because 80% of the people got the correct mail, no one had ever cracked the 50% barrier before............."I tried my best".........."Exactly, you're a disgrace to the uniform"..................."Get to the back of the line granny!"...............or the episode where he takes over for the other woman on the counter "ok, you can go on your four hour break now"...................

Can someone please explain how on Earth this could be a crime. I’m sure a lot of non-Americans are wondering how the hell a box you have presumably paid for can be ‘mid-used’.

That is exactly the point, you do not pay for the box. The box is "free" as long as you use it as intended (priority mail etc.)
Otherwise the post office is "giving" you a box and they do not get their money out of you paying the appropriate postage.

When I first started selling on eBay, the head of our mail room taught me everything about mailing packages. I once brought him a package in a priority mail box that wasn't going priority mail. Gil told me I needed to cover up the priority mail references or change the box because the "post office doesn't like that." I learned the lesson early on.

Yeah, the gist of it is that the USPS provides priority boxes for free as long as you use them for priority mail. The only time I ever had an issue was probably 17 years ago, I tried to mail books via media mail in a covered up box. Now, before I get crucified, it was a reused box, in other words, it had been mailed to me priority. I didn't have another box at the time and was trying to find something to fit these books, so it was what I had. My "argument" to my postmaster was that I was reusing it otherwise it was being tossed, in other words, it was a throwaway or I was recycling it. It didn't fly. I at the time didn't realize the rules. But now, they actually check it quite often. What really raised the random checks is with the ability to print postage at home, according to my local PO who I have a first name basis relationship with! (I mail too much), they now perform these checks b/c they have too many packages dropped off with printed postage that is incorrect, either the wrong box, but the main culprit is weight, dimensions and zip code. Apparently, a lot of home mailers do not understand that sending a larger than 12x12 package from Maryland to California has to have correct size and weight b/c the charge is "dimensional", not just weight. For example a 9 lb box from Maryland to NJ is say $15, but the same box with sizing over 12 inches cubed to Los Angeles is $65. You can see how it can be a big problem.

The whole mess apparently causes a lot of lost revenue, so they are trying to monitor it.

What does USPS do to re-used flat rate boxes mailed from Canada. As far as I know - nothing. I just black out or cover the US markings with an address sticker and put on Canadian postage and send the package to wherever it must go including to the USA.
