In this week in history, history was made when a snow storm hit Texas and shut down all 254 counties. Energy capacity was some how or another struck down and the geniuses in charge of the power grid initiated their version of rolling black outs. Which meant you got zero power. Temperatures fell below freezing while the grid operators gave you 30 seconds worth of juice so they could let you know you they were "working on it" and give you the tease of your life.

Citizens resorted to sleeping in their cars all night to avoid freezing in their homes. Many deaths were reported across the state that were directly attributed to the cold weather. In fact, a pile up of over 100 cars happened in Ft. Worth killing 5. Galveston ordered freezer trucks to handle the amount of lost souls who froze to death during the storm.

San Antonio remained calm with the River Walk Christmas lights on for three days to entertain absent tourist. Meanwhile, the leadership was asking the citizenry to conserve power. After 3 days of freezing temps, "warm sites" were finally open to the public as a respite to get out of the cold. Why they weren't open earlier is under investigation and why the River Walk Christmas lights were still on in February during a black out is also under investigation.

This disaster found Joel Ohlsteen's church ready for action to make up for the PR disaster of shutting out victims of Hurricane Harvey. This time around food, warmth and shelter was provided and splashed all over the media for all to see. So far it has been a success and maybe a lesson was learned.

Texas politicians blamed the frozen wind turbines for the lack of electricity, which by the way were noted to have never been "winterized" from a report a few years back. Details on the report can found online of course. Regardless, history was made this week when Texas failed to provide a simple service to it's State.

No resignations have been reported to date and the events of the "Valentines Day Blizzard of 2021 in Texas" are currently under investigations. Results of that investigation will be pending for a long, long time.

John...

this whole thing was so poorly mismanaged...
I blame Ercot...which handles 90% of Texas's grid...
and I'm willing to bet you money and give you long odds that the CEO's and management of ERCOT all had power at their houses...

the idea of seeing those year around Christmas lights on the River must have infuriated San Antonians without power...
that's a real kick in the butt...

it's almost 3AM here and I'm just too excited to go back to sleep right now...
I made a pot of hot coffee and God it tastes sooooooooooooooo good!
my power has been back on for an hour or so and my house thermostat says it's already up to 68 degrees in the house...^&grin

my water pressure is a little better than it was an hour ago...
my gas water heater is giving me hot water...
I may go take a shower and a shave before it goes off again...
maybe the turbines have thawed out and are generating enough power to get everybody back on...
and I keep checking my ceiling...both upstairs and downstairs for water spots...
thank God none so far...

I'm not gloating over those without power...
I totally sympathize if you still don't...
and hopefully you will get restored soon...
I have lived in Galveston for over 65 years...
and never even heard of anything like this before happening...
the last time we even got a sprinkle of snow was in 2002...
and it was nothing...

it's strange that most of the neighborhoods surrounding my subdivision had power for the most part and I didn't...
this rolling blackout thing didn't seem fair to me as I had none for 2 1/2 days and across the street they did and some never lost it...
in my case the main transformer popped 4 times a few days ago and blew...
pops were so loud it sounded like a sonic boom...

I'm gonna start emptying the ice box and freezer tomorrow...
not gonna take a chance on thawed out food...
I have a 5 lb. box of 16-20 shrimp and a few ribeyes that are still pretty frozen...
gonna make a surf and turf dinner tomorrow and eat like a pig...
I have enough shrimp to hook up some neighbors if they are hurting...

no restaurants have been open for 3 days...
no water and no electricity shut them down...
God bless you if had had food and couldn't even cook it...
so poorly mismanaged...

grocery stores Walmart...Krogers...Randalls have hugely depleted stock...
gas pump lines are 12 deep in some spots...
I was low in my car and was gonna siphon 5 measly gallons out of my motorcycle tank if it got desperate...
I have another 2 gallons for my lawn equipment...
mobile homes were lined up for 8 blocks waiting for their turn to get propane...
hopefully trucks are coming soon with more...

we will probably get some accurate stats on fatalities in the next day or so...
I have heard 20-50 fatalities...
cold really strains old/sick people...
ERCOT should be ashamed of theirselves...people should get fired...
again...there was no sharing the power...
you either had it or you didn't...
this rolling blackout system did not work fairly...

I'm lucky I have a fireplace...
it's hardly a standard addition to homes here...
it never get that cold that it's a must have and a lot of people just don't have them...

I'm betting in the next year...
most plumbers will have boats in their driveways...
they are making some good money right now fixing burst pipes...

this what what my plumber is gonna look like next year...

Mike,

Thank you for the update. Yes, poorly managed to complete and utter failure. I can't get over the freezer request from the Coroner from Galveston. That one threw me for a loop.

Read the article about the Turtles and the Game Wardens rescue of them. Sad, real sad. But, the human stories give me nightmares because they are people, our people who suffered a miserable death.

The energy providers have blood on their hands and the public is out for blood after this epic failure.

Why does it always take a catastrophe to implement change. Where are our futurist in the energy field who could see this happening if X, Y and Z aren't done? Toads, the lot of them.

See you soon my friend,

John your cold neighbor

John...

I just heard on the news that the death total is 28...
but unconfirmed if they were all weather related...
still...
you're right...
my neighbors are pretty pissed!

John...

I saw that on the news...
strange story...
thousands of cold stunned turtles in South Padre are being collected off the beaches and taken indoors to recover...
who would have thought???
