Values of sets (1 Viewer)

As I wrote in another thread, I still do not understand why the question of price gets so specific. If TS are overpriced, where is the company pricing their product at an 'appropriate' level (whatever that might be) and cornering the market? Is there a grand conspiracy between the companies because I do not see one of them selling at a price relative to the others that makes me say 'wow, why can't they all do that'? It also shows how personal collecting becomes that someone can say 'my job does not pay me enough to buy what I want when I want or my financial responsibilities are such that my money is needed elsewhere, or I personally do not see value for money in some TS releases, so by definition, that product is overpriced'. I am going to send a letter to Ferrari and tell them that they are money hungry capitalist pigs. I have a right to buy whatever car I want ... don't I? I also do not care for the shade of red. Why can't they get it right? Now I think about, I really do not want it. Its not good enough for the money. Don't they know people are being priced out of the market? Everyone who buys from them must be blind. I can see the truth ... why can't others? Why are they rude to me when I tell them they have bought a stupid car? I keep telling them but they just keep getting aggravated. No problem ... I will keep telling them. Someone has to!

They told me I can have yours. I need to do something with my Bentley first.

A great post, comprehensible, grammatically correct, commas in the right places (I think), no spelling mistakes and posted by the original author, surprisingly witty for someone who may have just gotten out of bed.....:wink2:

Yes ... got home at 2 am and slept until 4 am when I drove my wife to the airport. She wanted to get a taxi but that was never going to happen. I think I was lucky to get home. I am surprised I did not park my car in my neighbour's pool. I was very, very tired. Big night though!

Indeed, the DesertKiwi is on the way home to the shire after checking his bags for stowaway cane toads and gifting me with a bag of Kiwi-poo chocs and TomNT is off home to tend his pet croc, both lads deeply impressed with last nights event.

More than impressed mate{bravo}}......it was a truly memorial night, in-fact the whole trip was something very special, not to mention the great company!! :salute::

I can't thank you boys enough, for making me feel right at home and one of the gang. {sm3} Can't wait to see the new displays planned for next year too!!

Cheers Toddy

So what is the preference? Limited edition sets where not everyone who wants one gets one with a more valuable secondary market or larger production runs so that everyone gets one but the secondary value is less?

Limited Edition runs where all available sets mysteriously sell overnight. Yet some months / years later mint sets start appearing on Ebay or are at the shows at highly inflated prices.

Some years ago there was a definate trend of toy soldiers being sold as an investment. (Overhead conversation at the London Show). One for the collection, one to make a quick buck and one for the pension fund. Maybe manufacturers over estimated the true demand too.

Markets inflate themselves with greed being the main driver. Just like the Hunt brothers cornering silver.

Reminded me of the Teddy bear (Steiff) era. One day somebody sticks a pin in the balloon. Nothing lasts forever.

I despise the whole Limited Edition concept. Secondary market prices or future profits play absolutely no part in my collecting. I appreciate the higher production numbers and longer availability of items as I do not have thousands of on-hand, uncommitted dollars standing by to be spent at a moments notice on the next oh so collectible Limited Edition. This is my hobby and I appreciate having time to think over how I will spend my dollars. I cannot afford to be rushed into panic buying for fear of missing the very rare, must have Limited Edition. I'm not condemning others for how, what or why they buy what they do, but the whole LE thing is not for me and just seems to go against the spirit of a hobby that is supposed to be fun. I enjoy being able to go back and add additional figures to a line months or years after it's introduction or even to start a line that may be older but still available. LE releases puts the kibosh on that strategy. Unlimited numbers, longer availability are the way to go and to heck with the future millions when you die and your collection gets sold. -- Al
