War Along the Nile: Release Schedule 2010 (1 Viewer)

Brilliant. I'm just guessing that Mike will be there too.

Would love to go to the Spring open house - will have to check the dates though. My brother and I are going to North Carolina for a week of golfing in April and there might be a conflict - oh well, I am sure my brother will understand why I have to cancel on him :D;)

Saturday the 17th I believe, Mike. Shame about the NC trip, but golf as a hobby is far too expensive anyway.

It was a great idea :) I just wish it had been spread out a little more to give our wallets a little breathing room.

Hi Randy, hi you W.Britains-experts, I am planing to buy the hole range (26 figures). I have some historical questions left: 1.) Was there any battle, where both, the Black Watch Highlanders AND the camel Corps fought together ? 2.)On the other hand: did the Fuzzy-wozzy and the mahdists fight together on any battle ? 3.) Are there any figures from other producers (painted in matte), which I could add to this range WAR ALONG THE NILE ?-esp. are there some more Camel Corps troopers to add ? 4.)May I add some BRITAINS from the ZULU range, for example the 24th foot or British Natal ? Every comment helps - thank you in advance and best regards from Germany

Hello Hadrian. John Jenkins Designs has just started a Gordon at Khartoum series in matte. There are other manufacturers of this time period but they are done in gloss. -- lancer

Hi Hadrian,

I am not aware of any battle where the Black Watch Highlanders and the Camel Corps fought alongside each other. The highlanders were with Gen. Earle with the River Column advancing behind the Camel Corps.
The Fuzzy Wuzzy's can be used in just about any of the battles, even the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. The only difference I can see and W Britain has nailed it the Hadendoa in 1884 had the plain type clothing (1884) and then later in the campaign against the Mahdi 1885 they wore the colored patches on their clothing.
As for the Brits in the scarlet coats (W. Britian AZW) there were only a couple if instances they wore the " red coats". The Battle of Ginnis 1885 being one. Most of the units from England wore the grey uniforms including the infantry and artillery. The units from India wore the Indian Khaki drill.
I can't say I'm 100% right but I hope this helps.

According to the Osprey Men-At-Arms The Black Watch (page 28) the Black Watch fought at the Battle of Abu Klea as part of the Royal Highlanders. The Camel Corps as shown by WB in its catalog were at Abu Klea so I think you could display the Black Watch in the same scene of battle.

Randy

Noticed these on the WB site very nice :)

Looks like Polar Bear is right there was one officer and thirty men (Black Watch) assigned to the mounted infantry unit at Abu Klea, while the rest of the Black Watch was with Gen. Earle's column.
It would be interesting to find out if they wore the grey jumpers and the bedford cord breeches or the kilts. My guess* is that they wore the grey jumpers and bedford cords like the rest of the Corps Corps.
Hadrian, at least you know they were both at Abu Klea.
Good work Polar Bear.

As to everyone's budget, I noticed that there is a Nile River paddle wheel steamer with crew scheduled for release in late 2010 or early 2011. Wonder what that will cost?

I would guess in the range of $800-$1000 depending on detail. These are very expensive to make commercially.

This is what the Perry Miniatures site shows, so Breaker it sounds like you are on target with the grey and tan cord combo for the BW since each unit in the Mtd Inf war its issued tunic with the cords. Thus you could use some of the Camel Corps as BW. Not sure if they would have added red hackles to tropical helmets while part of Mtd. Inf.

20. Mounted Infantry KRRC
Mounted Infantry were raised from various regiments and mounted on local ponies. Frocks were the same as their parent unit but all wore Bedford cords, blue puttees, 50 round bandolier and carried a Martini Henry and sword bayonet. The pouch and belt on this figure are Rifles issue.

Hi guys ! Thank you very much for all your helpful comments. But still I am a bit confused:Randy is absolutely right regarding the Black Watch/Men-at-arms page 28. But in the Men-at -arms "The British Army on Campaign IV,1882-1902 on page 6 I could find the Black Watch only under "K" (means Kirbekan) and not under "AK" (means Abu Klea). WIKIPEDIA notices to KIRBEKAN, that General Earle was killed there AND the Camel Corps was there in action. So may I also play with my upcoming Britains figures (Black Watch AND Camel Corps) the battle of KIRBEKAN ?
My second question: which producer(s) would you like to bring out additional Camel Corps figures ? Frontline ? K&C ? TCS ? I heard even about TGM, that they will bring out anything for the Zulu war ?

All the best
Marcus

I imagine that John Jenkins will have Camel Corps figures in his Sudan range.

I would say you would be safe doing so. Were that there as Mounted Infantry or in their Highland guise?

Hadrian,

It is a bit tricky. The 1st. Battalion Black Watch were with the River Column with General Earle. The camel corps with Gen. Earle who fought at Kirbekan were the Egyptian Camel Corps rather than the British Camel Corps.

Regarding the Black Watch at Abu Klea- The Mounted Infantry Regiment of Camel Corps were picked marksmen from from various British regiments stationed in Egypt. One officer and thirty men from the Black Watch helped form this unit. So you see this small detachment of the Black Watch fought at Abu Klea as part of the mounted infantry. They most likely wore the grey jumper and tan bedford cord breeches rather than the kilts
Some great sources for this topic are Michael Asher's Khartoum, Michael Barthorp's War on the Nile and the Osprey Campaign Series Khartoum 1885. All are great reads.

From the photos it looks like W Britain has done a great job covering the units involved. At the end of the day they are your figures you can display them as you wish and at least we know they were all in the same theater of operation.

Thank you very much Jeff,Randy and THE BREAKER - now I have enough very good information. So my private battle will be a "little Abu Klea" - (I agree with the Breaker, that the Camel Corps at Kirbekan was NOT the British CC, so I stay at Abu Klea). Hopefully I can crate a new album, when I have finished my little battle scene :D...thanks again guys !
Hadrian
