George Templteon Stong's Civil War Diaries, a primary source for any ACW history of the Unionist non-military aspect. A challenge at 800 pages it is the companion piece to Mary Chestnut's Civil War Diary, a southern view. Published by the Library of America which is a national treasure of historical volumes.

Read it twice. Especially liked the political aspects of the 1850s such as the Fugitive Slave Act, the Kansas Nebraska Act and the Missouri Compromise. Brought back dim memories of my school time history classes. The military aspect is very minor in comparison. As a supplemental reading I urge you to read Lincoln's Cooper Union Address which made him president.
Chris:

Thanks for the informative post.

I am adding this to my reading list.

His diary began at age 15 and he wrote for 40 yrs encompassing 2,250 pages. He was a prominent NYC lawyer and helped found the Sanitary Commission to aide wounded soldiers. Early entries begin in November 1860 and most interesting recording the mood of the country leading up to the Civil War. Quoted extensively in K Burns Civil War docu series.
