Tom,

It is part of internet slang. There are so many abbreviations in use in cyberspace.

To answer your question, LOL stands for "Laughing Out Loud".

Did you know XOXO stand for "Hugs & Kisses" ?

Raymond.

Thank you...that explains a couple of things.......XOXO... now that is something I am sure I will not get on this forum......thanks for that...I think I may have misinterpreted the LOL somewhere.....cheers TomB

They're two different things, though, in that "XOXO" pre-dates the Internet. LOL is text-ese, no one used that before the advent of text messaging.

Prost!

On abbreviations, I was taught in school and university (college) not to use abbreviations, but to spell out all words. For examinations, there were strict instructions not to use abbreviations so as to avoid dropping marks. In a recent email message to a fellow forum member, I even spelt out K&C as King & Country. Am I fastidious? Yes, but LOL. ^&grin:tongue:

TTFN, Raymond.:)

Gen Y...like to throw this one around a lot....OMG "Oh My God".

When i send a text i allways spell out the complete word...whats so hard about typing "you"...I never like just "u"

Gen Y...dont know if they are lazy or just into abbreviations.....but whatever the reason...the current crop of Y gen diggers seem to be doing okay for themselves.....cheers TomB

Quietly rightly so.....teachers know best (Tongue in cheek ).....abbreviations can cause confusion.....I am always wary of any abbreviations (is there a short cut for abbreviations? ) ...that contain the letter "F"......cheers TomB

"TTFN" is an informal abbreviation for the colloquial valediction of "ta ta for now". I have no idea if this is internet slang or if it pre-dates the internet.

The fact of the matter is I can't keep up with the advances in the digital world. There has been a proliferation of the use of abbreviations, especially with text messaging. Sometimes, I just can't understand what young people are messaging, if there are too many abbreviations.

Cheers, Raymond :)
