What movie do you think is the best for your favorite period of interest.Whether it's the ACW,Napoleanic,Crusades,Dark Age,Roman,WWI or any other period. What do you think is the iconic movie for your period.Even though I like many periods I am only going to pick my favorite. My favorite period is the French & Indian War and of course the movie that defines it for me is The Last of The Mohicans. For my period no other movie comes close. The granduer of the scenery, the beautiful music,The heroism,The barbarism, the iconic warriors Hawkeye and Magwa. It is just a great movie for me.More popular periods have more than one great movie but try to pick one that really gets you going, gets your blood boiling, really perks up your interest. Lets see what everyone comes up with.

For me and my favorite periods ACW and Napoleonic. I would pick Gettysburg, if you lost the Irish "whatever he was" in the 20th Maine. It was a great movie. For Napoleonic, it is the Duelists. It didn't have grand battle scenes but the story line was compelling and the photography was awesome. It turned a huge war into a very personal thing.

World War 1 - "All Quiet on the Western Front", a classic that says it all and captures the feel of the period. It is the perfect WW1 film. -- lancer

I have Gettysburg and everytime I watch it I want to spend $1000 on civil war figures.:D:D:D Glory is a great civil war movie also.

There is no doubt about it:

SANDS OF IWO JIMA and HALLS OF MONTEZUMA.................Stryker

Battle of Britain for me for WW2 and All Quiet on the Western Front for WW1.

Rob

WAR MOVIES while gowing up:

1. The Longest Day (JOHN WAYNE)

2. Sands of Iwo Jima (JOHN WAYNE)

3. The Green Berets (Holly gees, JOHN WAYNE AGAIN)

I cannot tell you the HUGE impact on my values, belief system (the Church & Grandma too) and my life watching them on TV as a child.

Homorable mention went to "Combat!" the TV series. I was hooked.

Now these aren't my all time top 3 but as a kid they had the most impact on me.

Adding other wars: WW2- "Combat" had huge influence along with a long list of movies that still define the war for me. "Bataan" with Robert Taylor, "Guadalcanal Diary", "A Walk in the Sun". The Duke in "Flying Leathernecks", "They Were Expendable", "Sands of Iwo Jima", and his others. ETO not as well defined to me outside of "Combat". Loved the airwar pictures such as "Command Decision" and "Twelve O'Clock High". "The Longest Day" was and still is one of my favorites. If I had to pick an Eastern Front movie, it would be "The North Star", a somewhat blatant piece of pro-Russian propaganda, but very impressive to me as a kid. Korea is "Pork Chop Hill" and "The Steel Helmet". Lewis Milestone directed many of my favorites, "All Quiet...", "A Walk...Sun", "Pork Chop...", "North Star", and "Halls of Montezuma". Sorry this is so long, I just like the subject.:D -- lancer

Interesting question indeed. For me it would be
WWII Air: Battle of Britain, Piece of Cake
AZW: Zulu
Greek/Persian Wars: The 300 Spartans, The 300
Napoleonic: The Duelists, Master and Commander, Waterloo
Ancient Rome: Gladiator, Rome

For Naploeonic period it would be WATERLOO.

However, I don't think this movie is avaiable in the USA DVD format. Correct me if I am wrong. Please correct !!! ;-)

Yes it is, or was. I found one on ebay about a year ago.

I saw both Waterloo and War and Peace when I was about 12.Been fascinated ever since.

ACW Red Badge of Courage, again when I was very young.
Gettysburg and Glory

WW2 Longest day, To Hell and Back, From Hell to eternity.

Fubar,

From Hell to Eternity (no to be confused with "From here to Eternity") was a great low budget movie with Jeffery Hunter. Good one.

Other great defining movies for me in my young on old BW TV were:

- The D.I. (Jack Webb)

- Battle Cry (Van Heflin, Tab Hunter, Aldo Rey)

- Sergeant York (Gary Cooper)

- Northwest Passage (Robert Young, Spenser Tracy)

- The Charge of the Light Brigade (Errol FLynn)

Again, these weren't necessarily the best movies but they had most impact on me in my youth.

Top thread!

I thought about this one and I can't decide. Mrs Evzone reckons when it comes to history, models, wargames and toy soldiers I am a total obsessive. So the answer has got to be the last historical movie I get to watch. For instance in the last month or so I've watched for the upteenth time; Battle of Britain, Waterloo, Blue Max, Alexander, All Quiet on the Western Front and Last of the Mohicans ....almost forgot The Red Baron. All the viewings are followed by a full review of the relevant collections and invariably a battle or two.

So whether it is Glory or Cromwell its the last movie I see defines my period. Sorry for the wishywashy reply.
