Some comments about the Review in the article. Simple but descriptive of what the journalists felt.

I especially enjoy your photos - when (as here) you show one of your beautifully painted models close by an old photo of the same.

I think were you ever to wish to do it - you have the makings of a book here - with the added advantage - that by including your painted models - you could give indications of just how colourful this spectacle really was.

Perhaps when you have a few minutes to spare????:D

Thanks again Ana - for a most interesting thread - jb:salute::

Thank you, jb. One of my first collectors suggested the same thing to me at the show last year. I've been thinking about it. I might begin with booklets, like chapters. If I am to a whole book from the beginning I will never have time to even begin :)

I'm glad that you are enjoying the photos. They are my treasure.

Hi Ana,

I love the idea of a book as well! I have to say if I could go back and see an event it would be this one! the parades and number and variety of units and animals was amazing!

Now back to reality, if you are entertaining ideas of an elephant to sculpt you should consider the rearing elephant from your last set of photos. It would be a really cool figure to see in a Durbar display. I would also suggest a contingent of the Mutiny Veterans since they are vastly under represented by the makers who have put forth Durbar items

Thanks again for sharing all the Durbar information and your amazing sets with us!

Dave - I've been thinking a lot of that elephant too. It will be a technical challenge for me and many collectors will hate that their shelves can't fit it because of its height. I'm sure I will do it eventually. For now, I am focused on the Main Procession, which is of most interest among my Delhi Durbar collectors. But we will have to get to the Retainers Review elephants at some point...

Along with the Datia elephant standing on his rear legs, there are a few more Retainers Review elephants that i have considered making and that definitely will be in my list.

When collectors ask me what will I do when there are no more elephants to make, I answer that it will never happen :) There are 250 elephants at the Delhi Durbar 1903 of which we already made 33. At a rate of 2 elephants per year it would take me around 110 years to finish them all :D:rolleyes:

There are another two Durbars, Ana!!! jb ;)

Yes, in case I run out of this one!

The 1911 didn't have elephants to ensure safety (it turned dificult to manage ALL the ones in 1903). I don't have much information about the 1877, and there are not many photos as far as I know.

Cheers,

Ana

Pall Mall Magazine

Unfortunately I don't have any more articles about the Retainers Review:( The rest are general articles about the Delhi Durbar, with general reviews about the event, to round the subject up before close to its end.
I will be posting them in parts. But first I wanted to share an article in the Pall Mall magazine of that period, 'To India with a Sketch-book', written by Leonard Raven-Hill, my favourtite artist of the period. I haven't researched much about his work in other periods and media, but I admire his sketches of the Durbar A LOT. He draw with exquisite grace and gave his portraits a vivid character; I feel that he captured the real essence in his work.
