HINT: This is an old photo of the Maharaja of Karauli, HH Maharaja Sir BHANWAR PAL Deo Bahadur Yadakul Chandra Bhal. He was older at the Delhi Durbar 1903. His state elephant (and himself) are the ones I'm making NEXT, to be released in April :)

My apologies for keeping you waiting for more The Sphere pages. I am working like crazy on the new elephant that will be ready by April. But I found some time to work on the scans.

Hello,

Before continuing to page 3 of the Sphere 1903 I wanted to post links to four videos from the British Film Institute that are in youtube. I am finishing the new elephant (The State Elephant of Karauli), and I always review all the Delhi Durbar videos before I consider it finished. To see the elephant in action shows details that the photos don't. So I was reviewing all the Durbar films and I came accross 4 films that are worth viewing.

First film

This is an interesting film taken during the Delhi Durbar 1903. The details are always so rich.

Ana

Second film

An amazing footage of the elephants and carriages taken during the Calcutta pegeant in 1912.

I loved it!

Ana

Third film

A color footage taken in Sikkim in 1940, mainly shows the musician monks that I've painted soooo many times :)

Ana

Finally, the fourth film: the devil dancers

Footage taken in Sikkim in 1934, shows the Devil Dancers. As much as you review the photos, nothing can transmit more of crazy dance than a film. Enjoy.

I will be back with the 3rd page of the Sphere soon.

Hi guys,

We are in preventive quarantine here, so I thought I could post some news often to keep you busy. Here is page 4 of The Sphere, 1903

Let me know if you would like to see some pictures of the sculpting and painting processes of the new State Elephant of Karauli. I'm planning to have it ready during April.

Stay safe,

Ana

I know I would enjoy seeing your work on the new elephant! So please can we have a preview?

Dave

As I promised, I'm back with the process of the State Elephant of Karauli (my next elephant to be released next month)

The State elephant of Karauli was the 7th elephant on the right column at the Main Procession. It walked just beside the State Elephant of Datia.

Before showing the process, I need to show all the photographs I could get of this elephant.

This shot was taken from a larger photo

This is one of the digital copies that I bought from the British Library. It was taken from the Jumma Masjid, just when the elephants turned from Khas road to go around the mosque. The first two elephants are the state elephant of Bikaner, closer to the camera, and the state elephant of Rewa just behind it. After both come the state elephants from Kota and Orchha, and behind those, Karauli and Datia

K1a.jpg

This one was taken a few seconds before, at the same curve. One of the last digital copies that I bought. Only the detail of the front of the howda, the maharaja and the mahout can be seen here (the original file shows much more detail). But this picture has been very useful at the time of making the escort guards. This is the most clear photo that I have of them.

K2.jpg
This photo was taken a few seconds later. This is the only photo where I can see all the elephant from the side. The photo doesn't show excellent detail but you can see the whole pattern of the elephants clothes there, the man sitting behind the maharaja, the jingle bells attached to the lower back of the elephant. Also, some of the guards can be seen as well.

I will be posting photos and process every day so it is all for today. I don't want to run out of stuff too soon.

Stay safe, and be well.

This picture was taken when the elephants had turned around the first corner of the Jumma Masjid, towards the south side of the mosque. This is the detail that I used to make the state elephant of Datia, and now I've used to make the state elephant of Karauli. The following is the original photo (another wonder within my British Library digital copies):

K3a.jpg
Here is a general view of the south side of the mosque. The main procession is turning around the corner, the Red Fort can be seen in the distance, and the line of canopies along Khas road leads to the main front of the building.

K3b.jpg
The first elephant is the state elephant of Orchha, followed by Karauli and Datia, Jaisalmer and Dhar behind them, Alwar and Dewas Senior following, and Tonk and Dewas Junior the two last elephants that can be seen with detail

To be continued tomorrow...

Amazingly clear photos! Those will help with what I want to do as a back drop for my curio.

Sure, Dave, let me know what you need. Many years ago, in 2005, we exhibited the whole Durbar sets at the Chicago show. It was a Treefrog Treasures display, in one of the tables at the corridor of the Hyatt, just beside the reception of the show, where you get registered. I worked on a file to use as a backdrop there.

I still have the file if you want to use it. For all collectors. Just let me know.

Another beauty from the British Library, with amazing detail. From left to right, the states elephants of Kota, Orchha, Karauli, Datia, Jaisalmer, Dhar, Dewas Senior and Dewas Junior. Both columns are walking along Chandni Chowk Street, exactly in front of the Town Hall. They've already walked around the Jumma Masjid and now are heading west to leave the city

K4b.jpg
In the whole photo you can hardly see a small part of the Karauli elephant. But the photo has so much detail that even with this small part of picture I could take good information

K4c.jpg
This is the best shot of the maharaja's turban that I have, the most detailed. Also, the clothes are pretty clear and part of the detail of the front of the howda is very neat.

K4d.jpg

I could discover the two tiny lions on the head of the elephant only in this photo. Isn't that awesome? They couldn't be seen in any other image. You'll see how tiny they are when I post pictures of the sculpture

'Till tomorrow :)

K5a.jpg

This is a super stereoview that my friend Bill shared with me. It's, as usual, very detailed. The elephants have got to the end of Chandni Chowk, to the curve where Futtehpoorie Musjid is, and turning to ahmai pai. They will walk about a block there to turn left into Queen's road again, towards the west to leave the city through Kabul Gate.

In the photo you can see Datia elephant beside Karauli, just on the lower left, only the howda can be seen. After those, Jaisalmer and Dhar. Alwar, with the maharaja standing and looking back (this mahout is also turned and looking at him). Beside, Dewas Senior, with the boy sitting beside the British officer. Behind both Tonk, and Dewas Junior.

Even if you can see only the howda of the elephant of Karauli here, it gave me a lot of detail.

K5.jpg

I could work on the handwork of the howda from this picture. It is shown perfectly. Also, the detail of the usual cloth hanging from the side of the elephant can be appreciated. Even the smallest photo is useful for me :)
