Dear Pierre,

I agree it is unfortunate that so many countries penalize their citizens for buying from the US. We get the impression the governing bodies of many other countries don't like us or something, but I hope this isn't the case.;)
The NAFTA act does not permit customs duties on anything made in the US to be levied on items coming from the US but unfortunately that leaves you only with purchasing Build-a-Rama accessories without penalty from Treefrog, so I highly encourage you to do so:D .

I wasn't aware. Good to know. I'll check the products carefully. Thanks.

...
2- I must pay huge customs fees;
3- I must pay federal and provincial taxes;
4- I must pay Canada Post handling fees ...
Dear Pierre,
But every citizen of Canada has access to publicly funded medical care, which is funded by the taxes and fees you pay.

Shannon's picture of the original glossy set displays one reason why I like this set better. There is more variety of colors, besides the green musicians and light blue bannermen in the back, there are bannermen in front in red, and the figures holding various lamps, fans and umbrellas in dark blue. The new set (which is a prototype) only has the green musicians and the light blue figures.:)

You are right. And no need to put money in bank for university (in Québec, the fees are the lowest), no need to care for a pension plan (at least, somebody like me who's working in the public administration) etc, etc...

Even if Québec is the more taxed state in North America, it is the place where, at the end, it cost the less to live.

In fact, I do not care paying the federal and provincial taxes but when you add the shipping fees, the customs fees and the handling fees, that becomes prohibitive.

Pierre.

In Minnesota we pay state sales tax, state income tax, local property tax and in some cases a municipal sales tax. Without getting too political, our governor and legislator pledged no tax increases over the past four years, yet they have passed legislation that has resulted in mandated and unfunded spending requirements for county and city governments. They have also made massive cuts to education at the state level and still claim to support education. Minnesota is no longer in the top three states for student achievement as measured by testing or by graduation rates This no tax increase pledge at the state level has caused property taxes to rise by an average of 20 to 25 percent in the state for the last three years. As we local folks attempt to save our schools. Our local governments have had to act as the legislator in funding those functions that normally are those of the state. The state of Minnesota collects the vast majority of taxes in Minnesota and is more concerned with professional stadiums for billionaire owners and millionaire players. Special interest groups get their funding. They are just using Congress as an example. I believe the national freedom from tax day is May 15. In Minnesota it’s much later in the year.

My point is that we all make choices where we live. We all have obligations to the society that we belong to. Taxes and death are the only certainties in life.:rolleyes:

Michael,

I feel your pain living in the once great state of California I believe we're 48th in the country in educational achievement (test scores and graduation rate) and continue to spend 50% of state tax revenues (via mandate) for education. California is one of the highest cost of living states in the union with business fleeing daily to near by states.

As a native Californian I planned to retire somewhere out of the state (San Antonio, TX) within 10 years. It's probably just a coincidental that Minnesota and California are "blue" states not a "red"state.

So sorry, for the political commentary, Shannon/ Brad you may delete this response is too far away from the discussion at hand.

Carlos

With all this talk about high taxes and how much it cost to live. I don't have a desire to up and move to someplace in South America, Southeast Asia or the Middle East just to get away from taxes. Those places just don't have that much to offer me.
I've been to most of those places and I would not want to live there.

Now for something completely different. There have been many great pictures from Chicago and I want to thank you all for posting them. I have not seen any pictures of Andy’s Battle of the Bulge diorama with the church in it. Does anyone have any pictures they can post of it? I would like to see what it look like.

Thanks,
Old Guard

Yes, Steven, Carlos or Alex, please post photos of the battle of the bulge diorama as well as the Alamo Chapel Diorama.

Dear Steven,

Thanks for posting the shots of the other dioramas. Do you know who ended up with the Iwo Jima dio? I know the Alamo Chapel ended up in Kings X, and Hans got the two battle of the bulge vingettes. Did you buy the master of the new Chinese Wedding Procession?

Regards,

Louis

Dear Louis,
No, I do not know who ended up with the Iwo Jima diorama -- did not think it was worth 2/3's of what you paid for your diorama. I also did not get the master of the new Chinese Wedding Procession for a similar reason.;)
