Unusual topic but I thought I'd share. After buying my very first K&C sets online(Arnhem Bren gun carrier) I bought the Tiger and Panther from a dealer back in Canada.Thats what started it all.Well the horror part of this story was when I tried to place the Panther barrel into the hole with the puddy that comes with it.In the hole,a little pressure, slight twist and "crack. :( "My face paled,I almost got sick to my stomach. There I was with a new Panther and a battle damaged barrel within two minutes of poccession.I contacted my dealer in Canada(Ron Daniels) and he graciously offered me another replacement barrel. He enlightened me and said that I was not the first to have this happen.Duely noted the Ambush Panther came with the barrel already attached to the gun mantlet and easly placed in the turret.Over the years I have learned to delicately handle my K&C sets. They are fragile, thats for sure.
Anyone else have a horror story about breaking a valued set or am I the only one on the wall of shame?

I have one for you. It took me forever to find the King & Country WWI Flying Aces, Von Richtoven, Immelman, Mannack & McCudden (produced in 1991). I finally got the two allied Aces as a gift from Lawrence Lo. I proudly set them on the top of my bookshelf and stepped back to admire them. I decided I wanted to shift one of them, and promply knocked the other off the shelf, chipping the paint around his boots and slightly bending the figure at its ankles. I was despondent. Luckily, I was able to pick up the two identical figures on a buy it now from ebay for $28 a couple of months later, so I don't feel as bad now.

My wife, on the other hand, has effectuated a far greater disaster on my collection. She managed to drop one of my original wood bren gun carriers off a shelf, breaking it beyond repair. She could just as well have lit a $1000 bill on fire. Fortunately, I have two others, but I still went appoplexic. What are you going to do, these things happen.

She's still your wife, right? :D

I remember paying three times the amount for a retired WS piece and I went to put it in my display cabinet. Thats when I noticed I already had that piece so ever since then I created a spreadsheet that has all my inventory.

Little did I know that my profession would come in handy on this forum! While Shannon is the Treefrog guru, I am actually a Christian Pastor (of the Lutheran variety)! So if anyone needs marriage counselling (or confession!!!)because of their toy soldiers ...

I've done the same. As you can probably figure out, I'm also a jazz fanatic and I started making a list of what I have when I did the same thing more than once. So when I started collecting K & C, it only made sense to do the same. Fortunately, this hasn't happened yet.

I'd make grown men cry with all my K&C disasters: sets sold off for between 1/5th and 1/10th their worth, vehicles and figures dropped from shelves, but the strangest was my sending to Vectis Auctions a box of items I'd intended storing: I have a small number of shelves for displaying my K&C and so I rotate regularly. Well I ended up accidentially sending a box for auction and had to write to Simon Clark (their Military Figure consultant) to say "oh by the way add that other lot to the auction, and er .. em... I'll be sending another box containing what we actually discussed, St Petersburg figurines". It was partially a horror show and partially a success: on 15th February this year I had a WS21, XM02-05 and an EA06 lumped into one lot and they fetched less than the price of what the WS21 was worth. On the other hand some Battlefield Relics that I'd bought here from Pete and Shannon fetched an extra zero to the price of what they cost me. Strangest of all was the auction for my mint-in-box AN016: it fetched less than a damaged version on offer from another guy, simply because his was the last K&C item on offer and a lot of people grumpily but determinedly bid to excess just to come home with something from the auction.

Yes guys, she's still my wife. When you are married to a woman who allows you to cover every flat surface in your apartment with toy soldiers, armored vehicles, planes and dioramas (ask the guys who attended the symposium if you think I'm exagerating) she's a keeper.

I can vouch for Louis (if that means anything  ).

Well this doesn't compare to Louis' story but tonight my son was looking at the infantry soldier in DD 34 (the other 3 are paras) and he dropped him. Wrecked beyond repair. Did I remain cool, calm and collected, after all it's not retired? NO!!, I went ballistic. After I calmed down, I went to ebay and bought a new one and a figure from 8th Army while I was at it. Now, I'm cool, calm and collected.

I had a scare last night. We have a new puppy, and I have some open shelves were I display K&C, and as we were watching American Idol, I love that show, I caught him grabbing a figure and start chewing. Well I got to him on time, no damage.
Any one else have open displays, I got my display shelves from Micheals and they work out well.

Re: Michaels

It is a craft store, I believe it is a national chain.
These are unpainted open cabinets, that I painted to match the room decor.
If you like Brad I can send you some pics.

Gary,

Love to see some pics. We have a Michael's near us so I may check it out.

Since we're on the puppy-horror stories, I'll share mine. The mail courrier who was deliverying some Amer. Rev. figures didn't find anyone home when he arrived. He apparently thought it safer to drop the package over a 6' wooden fence onto my patio than just leaving it at the front door. It survived the fall but not my German Shepherd who ripped the package to shreds, took the figures out of their boxes and chewed on metal. You can imagine my horror when I arrived home. My stomach sank with every figure I located scattered throughtout the yard. Luckly for me, the reputable dealer backed me up and put a claim against the delivery company to cover the damage and supply me with new figures.

Brad and Victory,

My presently 14 month old Finnish Spitz made fast work of a couple of the 1940 Gross-Deutchland regiment figures when we was about 3 months old. If he wasn't so darn cute I think I might have taken him to the pound! I feel your pain.

Regards,

Louis

Replying to a oldie but goodie, when I was collecting K&C WWII I ordered the German anti-tank gun set (very cool set I may add) anyway back to the story, the package showed up early in the morning I guess, and since I live in Arizona the heat in the summer months gets HOT very quick, I didn't get home until late that day from work and rushed home to check out my new set, until I opened it and realized the heat had melted the anti-tank barrel into a 45 degree angle:(:( but with a lighter and very gentle touch I quided the barrel back into the correct position with the help of the fridge to cool it off after resetting:) so a happy ending here, any new horror stories of late?...Sammy

Had a friends dog grab and chew one of the figures from the souvenir set with the swastika flag, figure, mullered. but, my worst would be a so called friend visiting from the US who stole my K&C RM marching band on his departure!!! not a friend now!!

My Dog chewed a figure once, now he has gone i treasure the piece its a memento of a great mate just being a dog.......................^&grin

One of my favourite pieces was the Normandy Tilly. I was recently putting it back into the plastic bag before putting it into the box, under the influence of painkillers, failed to notice the bag was in fact just a sleeve.

Splinter camo has taken on a new meaning. No happy ending as also limited edition. No dog to blame though, only myself.
