Who Cares About 1/30 Scale? (1 Viewer)

OK Dave, I'm with you. I too am a Britians collector. That is all I collect, however I have only been collecting since early 2005. I have been quiet on the Britians forum because Britians themselves has been relatively quiet. I know Britains has had some good releases this year with the WW1 & WW2 sets and some ACW stuff. But for me there has been little to discuss as I collect their rev war figures. Maybe I'm just missing something, but I haven't heard too much about or from Britains this year. I know they are a company that can be said to be in transition with the recent buyout and all, so I hope that once they come out with their second half items, especially the rev war stuff, that it will generate more excitement.

Many times throughout the day I log onto Treefrog and eagerly look forward to some new posts or news on the Britians forum, and I find myself greatly dissappointed. To quench my thirst for hobby news, I end up hanging out on the K&C forum just to whet my appetite. It's frustrating to say the least. I have nothing against the K&C guys, but man, they have it made. K&C is a great line, the company seems to be in touch with their market, and Andy attempts to communicate with his customers more than the other companies. I read with envy and wonder when, if ever, Britians will "catch up" and give us something to brag about on the 54mm level.

If Britians ever stops making rev war items, then I'll definitely begin collecting K&C. I love the 54mm scale and the Britians quality, but then again I've never seen in person any K&C stuff. So.....to answer the original question of the post: I care about 54mm! Do I feel slighted by the K&C guys. No I don't. To me they have every right to boast and dominate the forum(s) by virtue of the fact that the K&C soldiers give them that right. K&C knows what they are doing and they produce quality products. The 54mm vs 60mm debate is senseless as it all comes down to a matter of preference.
 
One of the interesting aspects of this discussion is that some collectors have never even seen KC products. You really should try to find them since (in my opinion) they are a world apart over Britains and most others in terms of "realism" & I have seen most everything on the market in a local shop. The KC figures are much more robust than the 54mm figures - meaning they tend to have more bulk, but only a bit taller.

In defense of the folks at Britains they have been very busy with shows and travel this summer so please stay patient. There is a dominant thread in this forum with King and Country folks doing a lot of the talking but when there is something interesting to discuss from either Britains or a few of the other manufacturers out there the discussion can be lively and informative so dont give up just yet. I too have been waiting for some of the new sets Britains is producing to his the shelves and the wait can be really painful when there is all sorts of chatter about a King and Country set that just hit the streets.

As for the notion of once you see it or get a closer look at it you will just swoon over King and Country well I say thats only the case if you are primarily a WWII collector. Like I said earlier I dont have any because they are not making any sets that would fit in with the over all theme I am working which is mainly the Durbar and the three companies that are making or have made sets for the display which are Britains, Marlborough and Beau Geste all are 54mm also so even if King and Country did decide to jump in to this series they would be a lot bigger than the rest of the series and thus would not display well.

So keep the faith revwarbuff and take a look at Tommy Atkins sets for the French and Indian War I realize they are not American Revolution but they are really good looking sets especially the Highlanders. Also have you looked the latest series Britains ont eh soldiers of the British Army. They are covering the period of 1755 through the Napoleonic Era so they would fit well in to a sequeal for you collection, just some thoughts.

Thanks for your observation, Combat!! I am anxious to see some KC stuff and I'm sure once I do I'll be won over. I haven't been to any shows yet, but I think this fall there will be one in northern NJ, which is only 1-2 hrs away. I'll definitely check out the KC tables. Like most of us though, my budget is tight and I try to focus on what I've started to collect thus far.
 
Thanks for the encouragement Dave. I have seen the Britians items you mentioned, but for some reason cannot bring myself to add them to my colletion. As you put it, they wouldn't fit into my theme. But I will look into that French & Indian War set you referred to.

I like K&C as much as the next guy (unless it's Brad who likes it twice as much as the next guy) :) but i'm also a huge Forces of Valor fan and i find the Britains figures go well with those vehicles.
I really like Britains Normandy Breakout having seen the previews at shows and hope the finished product matches up.

My favorite color is green. Now all you blue people have an opportunity to readjust your thoughts when I issue a new green widget. It looks like the blue widget, but is green. Now the purple gals chime in and let us know that purple is soo soo cool that green can not compare. Soon all the colors have widgets and claim to be bestest of all widgets ever made.

Same argument can be made for, oh I don't know - football teams, car makers, fast food joints, and on and on and on. This is a never ending argument that will have no declared winner. Who cares about 1/30?, obviously those who have expended their wealth in making their collections. I among them. But, I also care about 1/35 and other widgets.

I guess this is also an acceptance issue as well. Will collectors be willing to accept new or different scales in the future?
 
I am the odd man out. I am pure 54mm! Having had K&C and sold it off! Swore it off as well!

As a collector I could never come to grips with not having a complete line. Knowing the K&C missing pieces could bank rupt me or drive me mad drove me away! The high demmand scared me off! I believe it is just the begining. As you can see competiton is now enetring the ring, soon more will come, and with an abundance perhaps prices will decline? As a collector of 54mm I can miss a set find it two years later and get a deal on it. Most likely less then it sold for retail.
 
I came to this Forum to get information on what soldiers would match up best with FOV. After digesting all of the information that was afforded me. There was no doubt that K&C was the most realistic as far as soldiers. I didn't want to make the move into 1/30 but there was no denying the quality. And now with the very detailed HB Tanks it all works for me. What about the FOV. I am matching Figarti (They seem to be the smallest, George thanks for the sample) with them. Don't know about Britians yet, and Conte is its own weird world....Alex

I have collected strictly 54mm ACW figures for the last 3 years. In that time I have added many Britains, Conte, and Forward March sets to my collection. But, I have come to the stage in my collecting that I must STOP and move on to something new. A big burn-out you might say. I have always been envious to the WWII collectors and the items they had to choose from and always wished I had started with that time period instead of what I collected. Well, now is a good time! Time to step ahead in time into the 40's. Who says you can't start over. I think from what I have read and observed for the last 3 years the smart move is to aim my collecting needs at K&C and their wonderful line and other 1/30 vehicles and figures. Compatibility is no concern since I don't think I'll be mixing WWII with my ACW collection. Anyway I'm pretty excited about my new move, time will tell.

I am pretty sure that you will have no regrets. You can't miss the goal with K&C.

I have several K & C boxes and all have 1/32 scale printed on their sides, so what is it with this 1/30 thing. I suspect K & C figures are slightly larger than 1/32 (54mm) versions because their height is measured differently to Britains etc, for example, to eye-brow or top of head. However as we have seen with the recent Figarti and K & C Tiger tank comparison, some of the vehicles seem very close in size.

Therefore, no, I don't really care about sticking to the so called 1/30 scale. I'm just going to collect what figures and models look the most realistic to me.

Which doesn't include retired K & C pieces as the later issues are much better detailed (there are to be new and improved tanks with better tracks so we've been told). I know some of the earlier wooden K & C gear was good but all the early figures look very toy like imo. Of couse they weren't issued in large numbers and are desired by some collectors for their so called investment value, but that doesn't improve their appeal as far as I'm concerned.

Hello There! I must point out that there are 31 new figures and 4 large scenics in the 1st Gear/W, Britain catalog already this year for the Yorktown series. All of the production samples were shown at the OTSN show at Chicago a few weeks ago and they are also pictured in the second half W. Britain catalog, the Treefrog Forum site and very prominently on the MichToy website. Please take a look at these and also know that there is more coming.The casting and painting is excellent and the uniforms and weapons are accurate. There are several more sets that will be added to this series including more scenics and artillery. Thanks, Ken Osen

Please look at the production releases in this range as several of the sets are now availible and are in stock, including the folks that host this site. I think you will be very happy with the painting, matt finish, colors and camoflage on these figures, Remember that there are more figures, scenics and vehicles coming in this range and we are also looking at other campaigns in the 1939-45 conflict.

Easy, I strongly urge you take the advice of Ken and take a look at the new releases, as a K&C collector who recently got a chance to see several of the new Britains WWII figure sets, I have to say I was VERY impressed with what I saw. They were all extremely well done, absolutely first rate in every way.

Wow, that's great news. I was always a Britains fan from the beginning. I'll have to check them out again! Hopefully they will have more GI figures to choose from than K&C. What does K&C have against American GI's anyway?:)

Well perhaps it will be good news for you to know that there will be more GIs coming, in addition to British and Canadians... as a matter of fact I can see some on my bench behind me! Maybe that was unfair though as it will be a while before you can see these. Sorry! Ken
