Why do we collect Britians toy soldiers. Well for me it's the range and the cost. I have to say they do very good sculpts and I think they are right on the money with there Zulu war collection. What do you guy's think. Simmo.

Hi Simmo,

Thats an interesting question and i believe you have summed it up pretty well. I have to say that with sets like the recent Nile Gun Boat and older series like the Glossy Durbar they got my attention because they really nailed Victorian Adventures at least for me. Bang for the buck also summerizes it for me lately. The sculpt details and quality of the paint job keeps me coming back for more. I really cant wait to see where the Crimean Glossy Collectors Club series goes and the Nile series is a true winner with a lot of potential!

The Zulu, Nile & Durbar are all great series. It seems all in remission at this time. First time for 2 years the Britain's site for coming releases has none of the above in the pipeline. Not happy about this, but the respite allows me to catch up with other makers. Still see lots more offerings in all 3 ranges in the future so will hang in there waiting for Richard to deliver. Cheers, Robin.

I limit my Toy Soldier collecting to just 2 periods..WWII and ACW, My ACW collection consists of 90% William Britains figures..and why????
Great value for money.
Terrific sculpting and animation.
Quality paint work.
And what is maybe the most important of all...The Continuation Factor!!, WB keeps the Series going!!.. Rebs, Yankees, Artillery,Cavalry,
Battlefield accesories. Everthing you need to slowly build up your ACW dioramas. I think this is the reason that WB keeps collectors coming
back for more!!...It appears to be the Strategy of WB when they start a new range they stick to thier guns so we can keep adding and
expanding, there is nothing more frustrating than a new range that dissapears after a few sets!!!!. If funds allowed I would like to collect other Campaigns/Wars, but we all have to limit our purchases in one way or another....But if I could I think WB would get my hard earned
cash!!!!!!!.

Steve

I would ahve to agree with all the points you make Aidman although for me it is the Zulu Wars. They are the only company that has a comprehensive range of the figures and accessories to great the battles at Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift.

I also am enjoying the Durbar, and prefer the WB as it allowed me to get in on the ground floor and not have to hunt for retired sets or try to play catch up from other makers.

I have always enjoyed Britains toys though from my first farm animal my Nan bought me back in 1977 (and I still have it):)

Great value, they make what we want, their uniforms are always spot-on (I have seen only 1 major inaccuracy over the last 7 years- the Hougoumont gate), and IMO a great style. Most importantly, great people.

I'm interested in doing a Zulu war dio and after reading how great Britian cover this range think are start buying some and it won't cost me a a:rolleyes2:rm and a leg

Great sculpts and WB continues to add to their exisiting lines unlike other companies. ACW is my favorite range and it has been pretty much abandoned by other manufacturers. And oh yeah, prices have been kept reasonable, again unlike some others IMO. Chris

I started as a kid when young,,the wonders of the gloss men and the boxes,,now they are pure realistic art,,I have hundreds of the old boys to restore and besides needing forty more years I enjoy opening the trays full of them and looking even in their present state of health.hopefully when im no longer the caretaker I will have brought back many to life

I think WB offers get value, selection and various price points. The Ceremonial range is great for new (and old collectors) Choice of matt or gloss. And lets not forget 118 years of history !!
I currently collect ACW but also like the new gloss FIW figures .

Kirk

I only collect from their gloss ranges, and specifically, from the Redcoats/Bluecoats series, from the Seven Years War/French and Indian War, because that's one of my areas. But I collect them, because of the quality of the sculpting, the level of detail and the quality of the paint job and finish.

I have some classic Britains, too, which I've picked up over the years with an eye to restoring them or kitbashing them into other subjects. In that case, it's just about having classic Britains in my collection ;)

Prost!

I collect WB ACW . . . . . price point and the best historical accuracy in uniforms, equipment (includng how the common soldier wore and personalized their kit) on the market . . .
:) Mike

Quality, detail, value for money! What's not to like about Britains plus they make some great glossy sets you just can beat the Redcoats when it comes to glossy sets!

They make the best ACW range out there! I have acquired some ACW figures from other companies but Britains has always been the definitive company making ACW in the the toy soldier market today and I now don't collect ACW from anyone else. When a company makes that much of an impact in a certain historical range, it is very difficult for other companies to compete. Every company has their strengths. For me, it is Britains for ACW and Zulu Wars!

I collect the Redcoats/FIW, really love those small glossy wonders and the period interests me. Recently got into the Zulu and Nile periods, in matte, I am interested in those Imperial/colonial uniforms. IMHO all of these figures are very nicely sculpted and painted, either in gloss (much more realistic and detailed figures than you'd expect from your traditional glossies) or in matte (having a few in my hand really was the final test and I must admit they exceeded my expectations). But I also like the historical accuracy behind these figures and the way the series develop.

I am not even remotely brand loyal when it comes to toy soldiers, but except for WWII, I tend to buy mostly within a brand that appeals to me the most within that range. I collected almost exclusively ACW for 8 years. I didn't stick strictly to Britains, and still don't completely. However, they make up a very large majority of my 300-400 ACW figures and accessories. Like others have said, in certain ranges Britains has a wide range of historically accurate, well sculpted and painted pieces, and over time one can continue to build. I have been putting together one ACW diorama for 12 years a little at a time. And of course their prices are very competitive. I have to think the longeviity and name recognition of the brand factors into it for many; they have a sense of tradition.

I have a goal of putting together a company or even a battalion of the 1st Foot Guards, with colors and "the Musick", from the Redcoats/Bluecoats series. I saw a similar display from one of the shows up in Canada last year and that got me going.

Prost!
