Why do a number US sellers who are members refuse to post to members overseas

there are many members on the forum , and with you many years, from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom and European countries.

Yet I am perplexed for fellow collectors who have same passion as us all do not sell outside the US, why ?

The cost has a lot to do with it.I was going to sell a book to someone in Australia and it was almost $70 to ship! Also loss of item or damage is a factor to some.
Mark

What Mark said, plus it’s easier to post within the US. I will ship to freight forwarders but tell the buyers that I’m responsible for damage to the freight forwarder but not after that. I’ve only had one package lost overseas. I had another lost but somehow it found its way back to me.

As a Aussie buyer, I realise that sending to OZ does cost a lot, being so far away from the rest of the 'toy soldier world' but if I'm prepared to pay this amount.

Surely it won't matter to the seller because he get the amount he wants for the item the postage goes to the post office .

When I paint figures for anyone I state that the shipping cost back is what I am charged by the Post Office, regardless if it it local, interstate or international customers, and I still get my payment for my work.

it's not really the exorbitant cost of International shipping...
which is fine as long as both parties agree...
I have had very few problems such a lost parcels or refunds...
I have had several issues with slow delivery...
sometimes 6-8 weeks for delivery...

it's the delivery time and what transpires if an item arrives late or damaged...

to rectify the issue...
the damaged item requires return postage to the seller...
which the seller absorbs just to get the damaged item back...

the seller has already paid the original postage...
which he has to refund that to the buyer along with the selling price...
he now has to pay to have it returned to himself...

the seller has now lost the sale...
ends up eating postage both ways...
and has to refund the purchase price too...
when that happens...the seller is screwed blue...

right now...
I have a buyer who's Ebay profile says he is based in Russia...
he purchased a building on August 15th...

when he outbid the other buyers I was disappointed that I now had to mail to the Russian Federation...
but then I noticed his shipping address was to an auto shop in New Jersey, USA...
I was relieved to see that I only had to mail to to New Jersey...

I assumed he was having me ship it to a domestic friend of his in the USA...
and he would then have it re-shipped to him by his friend in the USA...to him in the Russian Federation...
the item was delivered 3 days later to the auto shop in New Jersey on August 18th...

once it arrived in NJ 3 days after shipping...
I assumed it was inspected for damage...
and the deal was done...a successful completed transaction...
I thought no more about it...

I never heard anything from him until 3 days ago...
almost 45 days after I successfully shipped the item to New Jersey...

he sent me an email back that the item arrived damaged...
45 days later!!!

I asked why he didn't contact me 45 days ago when the item arrived in New Jersey...
and he said that was none of my business...
our conversation via Ebay's message system deteriorated when he called my work "artisinal" (homemade) which it was...
and insulted my integrity by saying I knew it was damaged when I shipped it...

I told him there was no damage when packed and referred to the pictures in my Ebay ad...
he replied that I used stock photos and the pics were duplicates of other auctions...

I had sold about 30 buildings of similar design in the last 60-90 days...but all were uniquely original in some fashion...which is true...

he called me a liar and demanded a full refund...original postage included...plus a refund on his return postage...

I told him I was blocking him from further communication and would not consider a refund of any sort...
as in my mind I had successfully delivered the package to New Jersey 45 days ago...
further that it could have probably damaged by his friend...or in the re-shipping process to Russia...
I told him I should have been notified on August 18th...when it arrived...of any damage...not 45 days later...

also...

I have a dealer friend...that has had a re-occurring issue with International shipping scams...
a buyer purchases an item...for whatever reason...postage on delivery is slow...no fault of the seller or buyer...
after 30 days...the buyer opens a case with Ebay that his item has not been delivered...
even though postal tracking shows it is still moving and on it's way...
more than once...Ebay will debit my friend's account and refund the buyer...both cost and postage...
the buyer gets a full refund...
then a week later...his item arrives finally...
and my friend is out all monies and product...
the buyer now has a full refund on the product...and his postage...and has possession of the item...
he's screwed blue...
this has happened to him several times...

Reasons - Path of least resistance, not worth the hazzle, lot of trouble. Dealing with broken and/or lost stuff is a nightmare.
I cannot blame them, i sell sometimes and it is just too much grief to deal with sending it abroad, I did once sell something to the US, from the UK, from posting to arriving in the US was three days, then it was stuck in customs etc for 2 weeks, in which time i was getting complained at by the buyer as it had not arrived, even thou he could check the tracking and it was in the US. I don't bother anymore with overseas, plus the postage is astronomical.

Plus the US market is big enough so why bother?

The Russia scam you detailed is all too familiar. You ship to a forwarder in the US and think it's done when it's delivered. Wrong! Claim goes in 45 days latter and your account gets zapped for the full amount and you're also out the item.

I have sold items on TF to international buyers who are active members on the forum that I felt I "knew."

I think a bunch of my FL Praetorians and a bunch of my K&C & TGM collection are now "down under."

On eBay, I generally stuck to the Global Shipping Program just to avoid all the hassles, even though I would occasionally get harangued for doing so.

That sounds very familiar. About two years ago I sold some FL to a Russian buyer who owned an auto parts store in NJ. Rather than ship it to him there I hand delivered it and had the person sign for it. I wonder if it was the same person. What city in NJ was it going to?

Brad...
the shipping address was South Plainfield, NJ...

I will send you his name in a personal message right now...
Julie does not want us to disclose that publicly on her forum...
if this is the same address...
is it close to you and why did you have a courier hand deliver it?
look at my personal message first before you respond please...

Typical international shipping scam. This is exactly why I refuse to send stuff purchased on eBay to these international re-shippers. I only use eBay's Global Shipping Program. Once the item arrives at the eBay shipping center and they ship it, any damage is their problem.

I will ship to a verifiable U.S. residential address with signature confirmation. That way, when the buyer claims the item arrives to them damaged overseas, my response is "Well, you should contact whoever shipped it overseas, because when it was delivered in the US to the residential address you provided, it was intact."

But it is definitely a risk with eBay, as they tend to side with buyer and not even bother looking into the details before issuing refunds.

I've cancelled more than one sale to eBay buyer's from China because something smelled fishy.

Mike,
Not sure what is going on here, but I can tell you regarding the Russian; if his ship to address on file with Ebay is some address in Jersey or a freight forwarder in Maryland or Seattle (those are the two locations freight forwarding goes to), Ebays policy is clear, as in crystal; once the item arrives at the address on file with no report of damage, you are 100% off the hook. If the person gets the item forwarded to him, tough ****, not your problem and Ebay will back you on that, I don't get this at all as it happened to me with a Chinese buyer; my responsibility ended once it got to Seattle.

As far as your "friend" who keeps getting hosed; is he using Global shipping.............if he is, they will not refund someones money if the tracking shows it's still in route.................if it does not show up, Ebay refunds the dough, not the seller........................if it turns up later, Ebay has the ability to circle back to the buyer and demand payment, if they refuse, they are banned.

If your "friend" is not using Global Shipping..........................he's nuts.............there is no way, no how I'll ship anything overseas via an Ebay sale without it, period.

And if you think you are losing business because they charge high rates; all it takes is for one deal to go sideways and any profits you've made over time not using global shipping go right out the window.

Can 100% concur with this, that is my experience even though I don't use Global regarding a freight forwarder. It is too much to type, but it involved a new cigar lighter. The idiot who received it was obviously not competent and blew the thing up (it shipped empty b/c never used). Long story short, in my last message to him, it was something like too bad you didn't burn up in the accident. Did I feel bad saying that - NO, jerk was rude to begin with and was a scammer. Ebay came down on him hard, sided with me and threw him off the platform. Again, I reiterate, i wish the jerk would have blown himself up instead of the lighter!

PS - right now, shipping to Australia from the US is ONLY International Express - priority is currently suspended.

George...
For International sales...
I personally use ESUS...
Ebay's shipping center...
my obligation is to get it to Erlanger, Kentucky...
then they take over...
it appears to be both the cheapest and fastest postage in my opinion...
plus they have reciprocal agreements with other countries postal service...
that I almost always get concise and precise final destination tracking from...
also they offer $200 insurance compared to USPS $100 coverage...

this parcel tracking website is absolutely...hands down...the best tracking site I have ever used...
"Global Package Tracking"...
if you don't use it...try it...and you can thank me later...

https://parcelsapp.com/en/tracking/

the problem with Ebay siding with me...
it's not final...
the buyer has other means of recourse...

if Ebay rules against the seller...
he can always go to his credit card or Paypal...once Ebay tells him sorry...
and they may reverse the decision...

Mike,
Quick note - USPS offers $200 insurance included with both Express and Priority on international shipments. I am going to look into ESUS.

Regarding the last part, you are correct in the past, but with Ebay now the payment processor, even if they use Paypal, it is still much harder for them to win on dispute. Paypal basically throws their hands up and quits and on credit card - if Ebay proves there was a sale, it usually ends there. The person may be refunded by their card, but typically they can't get it from ebay or at least the fight is with ebay, not you or me.

End of the day, the amount of scammers out there is really unnerving and upsetting. It is unfortunate even in this hobby that this occurs.

Final note - One irritating thing that I find is people who do not read the description or look at pictures. Because I sell used product, I take photos from every angle I can, but what is frustrating is when you sell a set that has never been removed from the box, but the box has wear. It is obvious in the pictures, so I list it as USED and in the description I put figures are mint, box has wear, see photos. Then after the sale, you get the annoying note - "you listed the item as mint but the box has wear" Response - I am sorry to hear of your disappointment, but please see the item description and photos.............................Response - Crickets.........................

Paypal has a window to report an issue too, plus they usually side with the seller too, they take one look at the volume you do and side with you.

I fully understand in the old days, the tail wagged the dog when it came to Ebay, ie, buyer is always right, buyer can do no wrong, seller is on the hook.............they've come to realize the sellers drive the bus on Ebay, if you're doing big volume and they piss you off, you walk, they lose you as a seller vs siding with a buyer and risk losing you.

Not so say there are instances where the seller is wrong, if that is the case, Ebay will side with the buyer.

I've had very, very few issues with buyers on Ebay, they for the most part are a pleasure to deal with, I have a list a mile long of repeat customers, if you bend over backwards to assist them, they are yours for life, so treat them the way you'd want to be treated and go from there, I kill buyers with kindness, if there is ever an issue and if the buyer plays nice and goes along with my resolution, the issue gets resolved and I offer a rake off on future order, it costs nothing to treat people nicely is all.

Tom...

George can correct me if I'm wrong...
I use ESUS...Easy Ship Ebay...I just mail International packages to Erlanger, Kentucky...then Ebay delivers it...
and I do like it...give it a try...
all of mine get sold value up to $200 insurance...

George use Global Express...that's USPS...
it's probably the best there is...
but to the customer...it's pretty pricey...

the biggest problem with Ebay...whoever you talk to on your second call...gives you different info than the first call...
their personnel is not trained uniformly...one representative tells you different than the other...

I know when a deal goes bad...
and a seller loses the case with Ebay...
their credit card company still might pull them from the fire...
but I hope you are right in my case...

and that is sooooooooo true...a lot of buyers don't read the ads...they just look at the picture...
this happens regularly...
I have a dealer friend...who sells flags...
he poses them with flag holder figures to display them attractively...
he clearly states in his ad's description in bold, black, large print...
"this auction is for the flag only...the figure is not included"...
and without fail...when delivered...the customer contacts him and says...
"where is the figure?"
and when he says the ad says the auction is only for the flag...
it's in the description...
they accuse him of being a thief...

like they really thought they were gonna get a hand painted (JJD...K&C...TG...FFL) figure with the flag for $14...

a few years ago I sold a building on Ebay...about $175...
I posed about 15 JJD figures on it...
clearly stating in the description...on the first line...
"this auction is for the building only...no figures or props are included"...
when the guy got it...he sent me an email calling me...
"Ebay's biggest scam artist thief ever"...
the figures alone were valued around $600...

I always read the ads...too many times I have been disappointed as a buyer...
I accidently bought a "used" t-shirt by mistake once...
by the time I realized it...it was too late to cancel before it was shipped...
I threw it in the trash when it arrived...

"caveat emptor"...read the frickin' ad...

be careful your house is not in the background of a $100 toy soldier set picture on Ebay...
the buyer will probably open a case on you...^&grin

try this website for tracking...
best I have ever seen...

George...
I hope you're right...
I have never lost a case on Ebay...
but people are crazy...
I sold a ring for a friend once...she was size 6...it was marked on the inside of the ring band...
the buyer said it was not size 6...and it would cost $50 to have her jeweler adjust it...
and if I didn't want bad feedback...I would pay it...
she basically tried to extort money from me...
Ebay squashed that one quick when they read all our emails...
but I bet she pulled that on a lot of sellers and got away with it...
