I've noticed a number of members seem to have a significant collection of Winter based vehicles and figures and I would be interested to hear what you like about these white vehicles and heavily clothed figures.

Personally I prefer to see the full coloration of the vehicles and the camo on the troops rather than white on white. Hey, I'm not saying I don't like looking at your dios featuring winter scenes. It just seems there's a lot of "white" about.

Is it something to do with the significance of the "Battle of the Bulge" in US history, or is it because most of you guys live in a frosty area :)

For me being a "GI freak" it's 1) partly because there aren't very many US figures in winter garb, 2) the Ardennes campaign has always fascinated me, 3) it makes a different-looking scene. Personally I couldn't care less about the Eastern Front, it's about the GIs for me!

Cheers OZ:

It is all about the Battle of the Bulge and the early battles of 1945 for me. I love the troops in white but I also like & collect the camouflage troops that you so admire. In short, I collect them both especially since they were both present in the Ardennes/Bulge Campaign!

I collect both Winter and summer stuff.I appreciate the contrast in colours and conditions that soldiers fought in.I like the Germans camo colours in Normandy and the snow covered uniforms at the Bulge.I think the Bulge stuff is very evocative of that battle and you can almost feel how cold they are.I also like it because with Normandy i can collect British stuff and with Bulge i get the G.I's.I would also like to see some Brits at the Bulge too.

WHAT DOES IT MATTER - BUY THEM ALL - I TELL YOU - BUY THEM ALL !!

AAARAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH........

To me the appeal of the winter stuff is commemorating the abysmal conditions that those brave men fought under. The winter of 1944-1945 was the coldest in Europe in 50 years. The GI's fighting in the Bulge were dealing with below zero temperatures, often with little or no proper winter gear. We just had about a month long cold snap here - it was painful to even take your gloves off outside for a few seconds - and the temperatures never got below zero. Just imagine the 101st Airborne in Bastogne, without winter gear, fighting in the snow in below zero conditions dug into foxholes for two weeks, and driving off the best men and armor the Germans could muster. Just read 101st Airborne Paratrooper Ron Burgett's book "Seven Roads to Hell: A Screaming Eagle at Bastogne", and you will understand why the winter stuf appeals to me.

I live in Scotland so it's mainly cause of the frost here!!!!:D:D KIDDING ON!!!!! Ilike Winter because they're cool, the again everything that King and Country maes is cool!!!:D:D:D

At first I avoided the winter stuff. I live in a winter state and it just seems odd to want to collect winter stuff when its just so darn rotten outside in the winter season. It just seemed boring compared to the regular releases. The regular releases have more color and appeal to the senses.

But then I got the K&C Winter Tiger and I was hooked. I now collect them all. I have just been told by George at MM that the remainder of my JG Miniatures winter bases are in. When I recieve them, I will have all of the bases for the K&C BB series, both US and German. I have built two winter dioramas using nothing but JG Miniatures, K&C and Dept 56 ceramic winter trees and they look great. But I still collect the regular stuff too.

Could you post pics of your dios????:D:D:D:D:D

I suspect the Winter Tiger got a heap of collectors into collecting the "white stuff". It's an attractive set but I feel the fire side scene had as much to do with its popularity as the coloration.

Personally I prefer figures that are doing mundane things such as cooking, drinking, talking, checking maps or checking weapons etc. A set with poses like those can be its own mini dio and the figures don't look out of place. Whereas guys shooting etc do seem out of place if they don't have something or someone to shoot at. Then you need to add more and more vehicles and figures until the scene just gets to big and complicated. Of course I like large dio scenes as well as anyone else but you do need heaps of display space and they often get separated after a while.

Oz - Just picked up on this thread - good thread. :) I like them all - the main thing for me is I think it might be a little easier to do the dioramas in the winter, also the pieces available are appealing to the eye in the main. Check out the 'Bulge' thread in the dioramas to see what I mean. The base was done with household white paint. I am thinking what to do for a summer and desert diorama at the moment......but it feels harder to do well!

Oz you are spot on there. The Winter Tiger certainly started me on the white stuff and now i can't get enough.I have just ordered HB's winter Panther, and although the shade of white is different i'm hoping they will go ok with the K&C stuff.I'm also going to buy the Grille soon.I also agree with you about dio's.You can't always have some of the fighting sets and resting/eating sets together as it doesn't look good.So a mix of releases is good, so you can maybe make smaller but more realistic dios.

Rob

Rob, don't worry about the different shades of white as the whitewash stuff was applied by the crews and varied widely in color. I also read somewhere that it sometimes washed off in rain so the not so wintery Hummel would fit in ok with the whiter K & C pieces. Maybe the owner left it out in the rain one night ;)

Thanks Oz,thats reassuring.I'm thinking its going to look cool with K&C's winter riders hitching a lift.

I am worried that Andy - plans on RETIRING the German BB Grille - have you heard anything? Its been out there for a while and he has to retire something in the BB Range this year - dont you think?

Ron

Funny you say that Ron,i'm grabbing me one of those next week. Its possible for Bulge retirements but it does seem a little early just yet.We would probably see some more D-day stuff go first and i really want that DUKW before it goes. But then again you never know do you?.I really don't want to miss the Grille and it will look good next to my Winter Tiger.
