World Cup (2 Viewers)

Al, I believe it’s shots on goal versus those on target.

Statistically, it was an odd match as France had only 36% possession but outshot Belgium by more than 2-1.

Thanks for the answer, Brad. Still, since there are only 2 possible results, goal or miss, it would make sense to me for it to be a single stat. Another one of those subtle things in soccer I don't get. -- Al

Al,

I think the answer is a shot vs a shot on goal. A shot is one taken with the intent of scoring and is directed to the goal. However, a shot on goal is one that is on net and results in (i) either a save by the goalkeeper or defending team or (ii) a goal by the attacking team. A shot that hits the post or crossbar without being deflected by a goalkeeper or defender and does not cross the goal line is not a shot on goal.

The above is from the NCAA soccer rules but I'm sure follows FIFA rules.

Allez les Bleus!! Despite it will be England (my preference due to the rivalry) or Croatia who will face the French next Sunday, I still humbley think the French have the best chances to win this WC. Let's wait and see...

Hard fought match today with Croatia prevailing. So it's West Europe v Mitteleuropa. -- Al

I think the result was fair. After a pretty balanced first half, Croatia played better, created more goal chances both on the second half, and overtime. It would have been great to see England x France on the final, but I think that Croatia will put up a great fight and give France a hard time, and, who knows, even a surprise…^&confuse:rolleyes2:{sm4}

I think the early goal discomforted Croatia because they looked out of sorts most of the first half. It also gave England a false sense of security however and didn't stand them in good stead in the end because they played it a bit safe.

Croatia woke up around the 55th or 56th minute and during the remainder of the regulation they won the battle of the midfield and took control. England was definitely on the back foot. The rest period between the end of regulation and the beginning of the overtime helped England but offensively they couldn't get much going.

Croatia is your basically scrappy team, a small team invading the party of the big boys. I'm sure France will be favored but the Croatians know how to get it done. They've been in two shootouts and now an extra time. Modric, Rakitic and Mandžukić (all veterans of the Spanish league, I might add) were terrific. Modric was like a whirling dervish.

Wonder what the Vegas odds on this pair of teams in the final was? -- Al

Belgium shut down England, 2-0, for third place. Don't see how England failed to score on that point-blank shot, but the defender made a heck of a play on the ball after the goalie was beaten. -- Al

Yes, that was an amazing scene, better than many goals scored! The defender was fast thinking and extremely skillful! Belgium earned it’s victory, no doubt about it!
Let’s see what the Gods of football have in stock for us tomorrow, France might be the favorite, but Croatia has the “eye of the tiger”...

Could be a big day for Mittleuropa. Djokevic just won Wimbleton for Serbia. Croatia trails France 2-1 at the 38 minute mark as a PK has given France the lead. Good game so far. -- Al

Someone needs to tell France the final has started. Were it not for Croatian mistakes, They would be in trouble.

I find myself wondering what was the French goal keeper thinking? What a bonehead error. 4-2 France with about 20 minutes left. -- Al

France were brilliant enough to win. They woke up in the second half, just long enough to make the outcome in evitable. Things changed when Mbappé almost scored around the 55th minute (or thereabouts). When things didn’t seem in doubt, they seemed to lose some of their edge.

A deserving champion.

I thoroughly enjoyed this WC. I watch soccer once every 4 years and this was worth it. Not having a real rooting interest helps my BP and allows me to watch for the sheer pleasure of the play. Congrats to France. I look forward to 2022. -- Al

This WC probably will be regarded as the turning point into a new football era. There’s almost 4 and a half years ahead to Qatar, and much planning and work will be performed by national teams in order to shine in 2022. Europe will keep being the center for world-class players to bloom and develop, regardless of their origins, but this will continue to impact the building of national teams to where they return to play.
Congratulations to France!
Also, congratulations to Croatia, they did a remarkable WC, achieving a unique feat!

I have a hard believing there will be a WC in Qatar. Due to the heat, the WC won’t be played until later in the year. Think of the havoc this will create for the country leagues. The WC is a nice quadrennial event that captures the public’s attention but the leagues (England, Spain, Germany, Italy, etc.) drive the financial bus in the sport. The club championship in Europe (called the Champions League) is almost as big as the World Cup. In addition, FiFA is thinking of expanding the competition to 48 teams for Qatar, rather than the planned 2026 North American WC. It could be a big mess.

Brad you’re absolutely right: 2022 Qatar WC interferes with the Champions League and football competition calendars worldwide, and yes, it tends to get messy and has many question marks attached, such as corruption in its choosing, slave work on construction, geopolitical concerns, you name it... So far, however, it’s a go with 32 teams, and Qatar has many rea$on$ why they might keep it on track :rolleyes2:
I also think we’ll witness some adrenaline down the road. Let’s wait and see...:wink2:
