France overcame Argentina (great game in the second half from the "bleus" with splendid goals)

Re: World

France did a fantastic job against Argentina and deserved the victory! Uruguay also deserved its victory against Portugal. France x Uruguay will certainly be a memorable game, specially if Cavani will be able to play. The bleus however are displaying great technical talent, speed and tactical discipline, so despite Uruguay’s great defense, the French team is IMHO superior and has favoritism to win the next game.
It’s sad to see both Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo saying goodbye to the WC. I have my doubts if this won’t be their last WC...:rolleyes2:

Carlos, I'm not sure if Uruguay deserved the victory but they certainly earned it. The match statistics overwhelmingly favored the Portuguese. They had two thirds of the possession, 10 corners to Uruguay's 2 and 20 shots to Uruguay's 5. Uruguay had very few opportunities but they made the most of them. They made sure that Ronaldo could not hurt them.

That will not work against France because France has too many weapons. They will need to play a lot better to beat France, which I don't think will happen unfortunately. Hopefully, Tabarez will come up with a good game plan. I would love to see an all South American semifinal.

Shocked that Russia beat Spain. Spain kept the ball most of the game but couldn't dent the Russian defense. Spain seemed to play without any sense of urgency, letting the Russians get to the PK phase. -- Al

It's an effing disgrace. They had no ideas, no creativity, nothing. They didn't have a good World Cup and it showed. The midfield was for crap, except Isco. What the heck was Pique doing on that penalty. Playing volleyball? :mad: For the love of God! It's a disappointing way to go out. They are in the same boat as Portugal: the stats all went their way but they have nothing to show for it.

A bloody disappointment.

I also was completely disappointed with Spain’s performance! And yep, Pique thought he was playing volleyball {sm4}{sm4}{sm4}
The Russian goal keeper today became a national hero. I still remember 2014’s WC here in Brazil when he was the villain after a monumental flaw playing against South Korea. What a come back!
The stats in this WC are proving misleading, ball possession is not translating into goals.
Right now Denmark is playing Croatia and I’m not very thrilled with the game that I thought would be much better. That’s why I turned my iPad on {sm4}{sm4}{sm4}

Disgusting game but typical of Spain - more than 1000 passes but to no real purpose until near the end when they desperately took shots at the Russian goal. But it's hard to beat a 5 - 5 defence. The Russian goalie played well on those 5 or 6 good saves. As for Russia, they were going for a draw from the beginning - Russia had one shot on goal in the game and it was a penalty shot.

It’s a shame two Latin American teams faced each other but had Mexico showed up in the last group game they would have played Switzerland and might have gone through.

Heartbreaker for the Japanese. Played their guts out only to lose on the last play of added time. Great game. Belgium v Brazil should be a barn burner. -- Al

I also felt sorry for the Japanese. They fought hard, however they made many strategical mistakes, biggest one being keeping 8 players on a corner kick 1 minute from the end of the 2nd half knowing how good the Belgians are in counterattacks (not to mention Japans’s average 10 cm shortness in height). It took the Belgians only 10 seconds to cross the field and score!
I think Belgium will play its next game against Brazil very differently of how they played today. IMHO they will play a heavy defensive strategy and focus entirely on counterattacks, differently from today’s offensive positioning.
Anyway, it will certainly be a great game, but frankly, despite Belgium’s merits, I think Brazil will have the edge on this one...:wink2:

Belgium vs. Japan was IMHO the best game so far in this World Cup...

Japan got caught napping on the winning goal. They should have been heading upfield immediately. It was nothing short of a miracle that Belgium didn’t score in the first half; Belgium was by the Japanese box almost all of the first half.

Belgium has been the best team in the WC and they dug deep to win the game. They were pretty impressive. Every team needs a test at some point and this was Belgium’s.

I don’t see Brasil beating Brasil — especially if Marcelo can’t play — and frankly I’m a little tired of Neymar’s antics. I think it will be a Belgium France semifinal although I hold out for mi primero patria, Uruguay. I don’t want the Cup to turn into a Eurocup.

I just had another look at Neymar's play acting. He needs to be sanctioned. It's been rumored that he may transfer to Real Madrid. God, I hope not. Barcelona is much better without him.

His acting is being extremely criticized and ridiculed here in Brazil too. I also think he has to be sanctioned for this kind of stupid behavior. Apparently the Real Madrid transfer is fake news, and I also hope he stays in PSG; I can't imagine him playing with Cristiano Ronaldo... too small fields for too (and two) large egos...{sm4}
I would love to see a South American showdown with Brazil dueling against Uruguay on the semi-finals, but I don’t think France and Belgium are tending to agree…{sm4}{sm4}

It doesn’t look like he’d have to worry about playing with CR as Cristiano looks like he’s moving to Juventus; he and Perez (the RM president) don’t get along. It will be next to impossible to replace his scoring.

Looks to be a done deal. Madrid won’t fight the transfer.

You are right. Seems he will be stamping his passaport in Italy. They seem to be working out the detail$...
Anyway, I still hope Neymar wont go to Real Madrid... Let's leave him "acting" in Paris, who knows he wins a "palme d'ór" at Cannes {sm4}{sm4}

The Colombia England match is a fight until the death. Vamos muchachos!

Glad to see England win through, even if it did raise my BP. Very entertaining game. I do not understand the 2 periods of extra time. Everyone seems to play to get to the PK phase anyway, so why play the 2 periods of time? Another question...are the 2 extra periods mandatory or if someone scores during the 1st OT, is the game over after the 1st period? Thanks for answering an amateur soccer fans questions. -- Al
