Germany survives.

Wow.

What an incredible sporting event to witness, soccer is quite a game.

I don’t believe what I just witnessed. Kroos, awesome. German will and perseverance. I’m still shocked. Hard to count out the Champions. They ought to beat South Korea to go through. Mexico Sweden will be one heck of a match.

Germany just dominated the whole 2nd half. Plus, Germany was down a man and still kept the blitzkrieg at full tilt. One of those shots had to go in eventually. Great game. -- Al

They dominated the Mexico match too but did not win. Sweden decided to park the bus for the most part and it took an amazing shot — one of the best I’ve ever seen — to beat them.

I’m still in awe! {eek3} I thought the tie with Sweden was a done deal... It was amazing! The Swedes are still trying to find out what hit them
The Swedish player who did that totally unnecessary foul in the last seconds of the game will have difficulty getting to sleep for quite some time...

Congrats to Germany but I think Sweden got denied an obvious penalty kick in the first half thanks to the ref...

Is there a skunk score in soccer? Where is the towel for Panama to throw in? Jeesh. -- Al

England are now level with Belgium on goals and should be ahead by the end of match. This matters because you don't want to wind up in the same bracket as Germany. By the time England Belgium rolls around, we will have a better idea of the brackets.

Panama is dreadful. This is the team that beat out the US for the final spot in the CONCAF region. As terrible as the US was, I'd have to think they'd acquitted themselves better.

A moral victory for Panama as they score their first ever WC goal. It cost England the lead in goal differential, though.

I loved to see the Panamanian fans cheering and celebrating their first goal in a WC, they were so happy it seemed they were winning... quite touching!
To my own surprise, I liked Japan x Senegal, it was a good match.
But the best part of today’s games was to see that Colombia finally flourished, and made a great game against Poland
Unlike many past WC’s, the 3rd games of the group phase have most definitions still hanging in the balance. This week promises to show a lot of drama, victories and defeats, hopefully with great football while the group phase draws to an end!

Colombia was terrific today. The man of the match was Cuadrado. He was incredible on the wings. Let's hope they can beat Senegal to go through.

Having a good time watching the WC.
I like the brevity of the games, 90 minutes, give or take, with no time outs. Don't have to commit 3 1/2 hours to viewing a single game.
Lots of late goals have made for exciting games, even the ties.
Soccer players are all drama-queens. The slightest touch sends them slamming to the ground, rolling around in agony, with the expression of the mortally wounded on their faces. Then they're up and playing 10 seconds later. Enough already.
Some of the announcers are terrible, especially that guy who yells gooooooooooooooooooooal for 5 minutes.
Just some of my thoughts and opinions.:wink2: -- Al

Wild and crazy matches this afternoon. Spain didn’t look great, especially in defense. DeGea looks shaky in goal and he’s supposed to be one of the best; he never looks good when playing for Spain. They will need to improve to contend for a title. They looked like they were going to have to face los Uruguayos but, unexpectedly, won the group. It was a very tough group.

I assume you mean Andres Cantor on Telemundo. I like the calls but he’s talking to a Spanish audience. I think Americans a little more restrained. Just a different style. I actually prefer the Spanish broadcasts.

Great day indeed! Looking into my football cristal ball (that keeps malfunctioning during this WC {sm4}) I’d say Spain will kick the Russians out, and Portugal (or realistically meaning Cristiano Ronaldo + 10) won’t pass the Uruguayans. It’s fun to make these forecasts just to see them totally wrong later...:wink2:

I agree Carlos. I see Spain losing to Russia and Portugal losing to the first country I lived in outside the US. However, Portugal did beat some tough teams in the 2016 Euros so there’s no counting them out. CR has a strong will.

In tomorrow’s matches I like Denmark to join France and Nigeria to join Croatia. Argentina is just a hot mess right now.

The France v Denmark game reminded me of why I'm not much of a soccer fan. Lots of passing, little real action, neither team seem interested in making a real attempt to score and the wonderful result is a dull 0-0 final. First real dud game I've seen this WC. Then again, it's possible I don't really appreciate the intricacies of soccer.:rolleyes2: -- Al

I have the same problem. My biggest peeve is seeing players collapse like a rock whenever they are touched, grab their knee and roll around on the ground, make hand gestures to the ref, and after a penalty (or whatever they call it in soccer) is called leap up as though nothing happened. Saw that about five times in five minutes of the Mexico game. It's ridiculous. They need an embellishment penalty in soccer to cut that out.

That’s possible as you only watch football every four years :wink2:

Australia had to win to beat out Denmark but Peru was leading 2-0 so there was no incentive for them to play hard. That’s not the game I watched.

Today’s Nigeria Argentina was more indicative as more was on the line. Hopefully, you watched that one.

You got me, Brad. The only soccer I ever watch is the WC, so I'm a little bit of an amateur when watching the games.
I actually have watched most of the games for at least some of the time. I have a 2 TV set up for watching the O's and Nats who play at the same time very often, so I use the same set up to watch both WC games that are currently being played. I pick the game I deem most interesting for the HD TV with sound, and put the 'lesser' game on the old, small TV with muted sound. I see most of the action, but miss some of the commentary. -- Al

Sorry for being a little sarcastic. Scoreless games are not great to watch, especially with nothing on the line. Reminds me of 1982 when Austria and Germany played pittipat with the ball to deny Algeria a place in the final 16. I think the Group E and G matches should be good as contenders are fighting for survival.

The conventional wisdom is that the WC starts when the knockouts start as teams will be fighting for survival. Hopefully, no games will be decided by penalties but I’m sure some will be.
