Wow Look At The Price Of This One (1 Viewer)

When I was hunting down my KGL figures I found NA71, NA72 and NA76 to be the most difficult to find - especially NA76. I joked with my wife last night that between the KGL and 71st figures I basically had in value the entire amount I have spent on my entire collection thus far. :D

I think it is a fun discussion but we all seem to agree we don't buy for profit rather the love of the subject matter, the quality of the sculpt and the beauty of the art. WW II or Naps - toy soldiers are beautiful works of art.

People get outraged about prices until they realize that they have a piece that they paid $85.00 for and now is worth $100.00. Let's get real: price is a a fair reflection of an object's worth, and worth is relative to the scarcity and desirability of that object. I remember going to Gideon's old store and debating about buying the Matilda a dozen times. I never did, and now I regret it. Will I pay $400.00 for it? NO. Not because I do not think is worth it, but because there are other things that I want to have more than the Matilda. Now, if I had unlimited funds, I would not hesitate to buy the Matilda for $1000.00. So here is a third factor that drives the price of something: How much money the prospective buyer has in descretionary spending money, and how many objects he desires are out there.

I could be collecting Snapple caps, and if I have all of them but one, that missing cap would be extremely valuable. When it comes to K&C, we, collectors, fantasize about how this or that particular piece would look on a particular spot on a shelf or diorama, and there is nothing like the pleasure of unpacking that piece and place it on that special spot. As the commercial says: priceless!!!

Of course, you're talking to someone who bought an extra Greif and Tunisian Tiger by accident and has a few pieces with WS and single digits following them.

Well , price is a good strategy for keeping the other half happy, look honey bought the stug for 200 but can sell for 400, even though I've no intention of selling:D:D Interesting thread this one, the message seems to be , could be worth a lot but don't bank on it, I'm afraid I view them as very cool toys , and they have the chips and dented helmets to prove it , so I agree with previous advice if planning to re-sell keep in box:D Not sure what makes a piece desireable as all K&C weren't created equal, some of the best figures I've come across imo, sell near original price, those are the original release 2001 Japanese iow jima, dunno why I like them, but the poses are great and they are nice and chunky, very dynamic looking. The newer Jap releases aren't as attractive imo. Can't bring myself to pay over 200 though for a set of 4 figures, like the german and american casualities though, but regularly see them go for that! It is worthwhile trawling the dealers , there are plenty of retired sets at cost or marginally above cost on line , but you do have to look hard depending on what piece you're after:) Seen stuff on ebay go for silly money when it was available in the retired section of treefrog or King's X. Although king's X seems to have been plundered of all its old retired stuff recently:)

I'm afraid my wife always reply's with 'But your never going to sell it are you'!

I missed out on the D Day casualty set and i regret that. However as you say i would not really want to pay over a hundred quid for them now. When i look at the quality of todays figures compared to that of a few years back the difference is stark. Some of the early D Day figures(wonderful and valuable as they are in their own right)just would not look good next to todays sets. This acts as a good reason for me not to spend large amounts on older stuff. There is however the odd exception, and one of those was the Matilda.I paid considerably more for it after it was retired than i would have done before, however it really is worth it as its a fantastic model and one of my very favourites.

Yes, I am still in need of NA71, 73, & 76....but I'm on a mission and will keep you posted as things develop.

Oh, I know, I know. Frustrating isn't it, but at the same time I guess it makes us value the pieces we do have in our collections all the more.

Cheers

Very true, and unless i win the lottery i'll never be able to afford all the things i'd like,so sometimes difficult decisions have to be made. When i say difficult decisions i don't mean REAL difficult decisions.I mean here in 2008 there are elderly people in this country having to decide between heating or eating..so kinda puts my decision in the shade somewhat!

Rob

No this is wrong I say......these pieces are NOT worth it...they are inflated!!! They should be sold for what you paid or less......who cares about the shipping you paid or the taxes etc etc...

Sir when shall I release the calvary...not yet sir.....wait for my order!!!!

WELLINGTON

If you find a Van Gogh in a dumpster and spend $3.00 on fuel getting it home would you charge $2?

I know thats a stretch, but, what about a rare Britains set or a South African Dinky Toy? Or any other fairly limited production piece with more people wanting it than were produced?

It's not fair that you are casting judgement on people for achieving prices dictated by others.

You and I have done business in the past and I appreciate that greatly but what you are saying here is really not fair at all. Much of the money gained by selling off older pieces goes right back into the hobby allowing people who otherwise couldn't to purchase more sets thereby keeping these newer companies alive and well.

Also, for many dealers out there (and there are many!) this is very helpfull as the competition for business is stiff and expensive to attain. In some cases this is the only route some dealers have to actually make the profit they need to continue ordering and selling the products Andy and others make thereby keeping King & Country a viable business. Without its dealer network, King & Country is dead.

Lastly, one should never presume that another person should or shouldn't sell an item for the same or less than what they paid for it. That is up to the individual.

Nobody is ripping anybody off.

Congrats on your find:)! The K&C naps are quite nicely done. Like you, I'm playing catch up with this range and have decided to postpone the Greys until my 42nd is complete, then we will see:).

Yes, I'm kind of waiting to see what the next dispatches look like to plan my next move, but I am simultaneously trying to complete my Black Watch and Greys at this point. I'm about 50 percent done with each now.

Watch those DISPATCHES boys !! He will retire more Napoleonics - you can count on that !
