WW 2 Pacific Theater Fiction (1 Viewer)

Anyone have suggestions for novels or short stories?

I just read a compilation of three novellas, one of which is about the crew of a PBY Catalina "Black Cat" set in the Pacific (the other two are about a WWI pilot and a retired Marine Sniper being hired to go after some terrorists). If it sounds interesting, I will get you the information.

How about the two classics, The Thin Red Line by James Jones or The Naked and the Dead by Norman Mailer. Other real good ones are Once an Eagle by Anton Meyer and War and Remembrance by Herman Wouk, Battle Cry by Leon Uris and Mister Roberts by Thomas Heggen. These are all full length novels but all great reads. I especially enjoyed Meyer's book. -- Al

How 'bout Clavell's "King Rat"?

"The Caine Mutiny" and "From Here to Eternity" also come to mind.

Prost!

Don't forget two of my favorites :
--- The Naked and the Dead - 1948 novel by Norman Mailer.
--- The Thin Red Line a novel by James Jones

There are actually many but these are two that I enjoy AND they made movies from the books.
(Books are "ALWAYS" better though)

"The Caine Mutiny" is certainly a much different story in its original form, compared to the movie. The screenplay almost sanitizes the story, which is a little darker, I think, in the book. The events play out a little differently, too. Though, I expect that when the film was made, the Navy may have had some influence in making the story a little lighter, in return for its imprimatur and cooperation.

Prost!

What about "Tales of the South Pacific" by James A. Mitchener. The famous movie based on it is a rollicking tale of battles and hair care.

Al's suggestion "Thin Red Line" is at the top of the list. I would add King Rat, about POW camp survival and an excellent read. Chris
